You're in a Great Position...
AoG every year offers about 50 scholarships to very promising applicants that were recommended by WP. Your DS is just on the cusp of being offered an appointment but thought high enough to offer you the opportunity to polish up his resume for next year. In my opinion going to a prep school is a better path than direct admits. He will be better academically prepared, a year older; the family will be better prepared. You will have to seek another nomination though. (The success rate is very high to get a nomination. I have only heard of one out of two hundred)
The AoG will be enough to cover roughly half of the tuition of a prep school of your choice. Some schools have other scholarships to cover the remainder of tuition. AoG will provide you a list of prep schools to choose from depending on what fits the best. Some are military schools with programs that last a year. Some are an extension program of a junior college, while others are extension of a military high school. My favorite is NWP, Northwestern Prep in Crestline, CA. (This year NWP is on the AoG list for the first time) It’s small program, less than 95 kids who are all in the same situation needing to have their ACT/SAT, academic skills and time management skills honed. The second semester is through a junior or four year school and you take classes that mirror the first year as a Plebe. NWP leaves the military stuff to WP.
The appointment is there for you to lose.
I hope this helps.
Congrats!!
