For all future Hokies - it appears that all incoming freshmen to the VA Tech Corp of Cadets will receive the Emerging Leaders Scholarship! $2k 1st year, $3k 2nd and 3rd years and $4k 4th year (for out of state students)... every little bit helps! My son received the e-mail this morning!

That really says something about the strength of the VT Corp of Cadets Alumni Association which funds the scholarships...

Did it say to "all" freshman. Don't know if my son received this. Did your son commit to VTCC?

His e-mail did say all incoming freshmen. He has not yet committed as we are going to try and have his ROTC Scholarship transferred to VT, but it's his #1 choice. Good luck!

The scholarship is for all incoming in-state cadets.

"The Virginia Tech Corps alumni will be awarding Emerging Leader Scholarships to all incoming in-state cadets this year worth $8,000 each (paid $1,000 your first year, $2,000 each your sophomore and junior ..."

There is a different e-mail for out-of-state cadets (which my son received today): "The Virginia Tech Corps alumni will be awarding Emerging Leader Scholarships to all incoming out-of-state cadets this year for $12,000 each (paid $2,000 your first year, $3,000 each your sophomore and junior year, and $4,000 your senior year)."

Looks like it went out to those accepted at least.

That would be wonderful. My son is doing his overnight soon. We shall see.

Waiting to hear from VTCC. It says online that these were merit based? It did say ALL out of state accepted students?

What I posted above is a direct cut & paste from the e-mail my DS received this morning. There are stipulations for retaining it in years 2-4 (gpa, stay in good standing, pass PFT, submit a new FAFSA every year).

Wow, that does say a lot about the power of the VTCC alumni, as well as their love for the Corps!

When I was in the VTCC (08-12), the ELS was given to the first 200 freshmen who committed to VT (i.e. sent in their paperwork/deposit). Not sure if its changed since then to become merit-based.

It must have changed -- maybe to those admitted? -- because my DS has not committed nor paid a deposit. It could still be merit based, but the e-mail didn't indicate that. There is an application online to fill out.

Received the same email yesterday, all out-of-state cadets will be receiving the ELS. I remember getting an email earlier in the year from the commandant stating that it was likely that all incoming cadets would qualify for and receive the scholarship, and that was before the deadline to apply for the ELS... So I assume the number of scholarships that go out are based on the amount of money in the alum pot, and this year there is clearly plenty to go around.
