Private pilot license

Yes, the aero club allows you to do that on club time (and I believe, money, but I'm probably wrong). That's what I plan on doing.

You pay for your Aero Club flying time.

Oh. How much is it roughly?

I am a Candidate for the CO 2018 and received my PPL on March 5, 2014. Let's just put it this way: it's not cheap! :p

Although worth every cent, it was indeed expensive. Love to fly!

Is there any advantage to getting a ppl before going to USAFA? And does anyone know the cost of getting it there?

I got my license there about 2 years ago before I graduated.. You go on your own time and pay with your own money. The planes are relatively cheap compared to a lot of places, but they aren't the nicest in the world. Instructors are very good (pm me if you want more info bout them).

Getting your PPL is like your drivers license, but on a larger scale. If you love flying and think you may want to fly in the civilian world while you're at the academy or after you graduate, get it. I spent ~$6500 on mine there. It'll get you headed in the right direction before you head off to UPT. It's a very very awesome area to learn to fly.

Yes, you can wait until after UPT And get your commercial license with just a test, but that's a different topic.

You need a minimum of 40 hours for your PPL, but it will be more unless you're perfect from the start. The Aero Cub instructors are $30/hr. and the plane rentals are $89-$99/hr wet, depending on which plane you want. That's a minimum of $5160. Plus the cost of ground school before you even start flying.

My opinion: The PPL helps to get a pilot slot for the ROTC and OTS candidates. At USAFA you can pretty much get a pilot slot if you're dedicated. I would say its a waste to spend your own money to get a PPL at USAFA.

Why, you ask?

1. You probably won't have time to do it until Junior year, anyway.
2. Take soaring the summer after your Doolie year = Ground school plus 10 hours in a glider paid for by USAFA.
3. Take Powered Flight as a course Senior year = Ground school plus 25 hours in a Cirrus SR-20 paid for by USAFA.
4. Go to IFS and get 37 more hours in a Diamond DA-20 paid for by the Air Force.

After UPT my son was able to go to San Antonio and test for his PPL, Instrument, and Commercial Instrument (up to 49 passengers) licenses all at once for about $800 in one weekend.

Understandable. Info is good, thanks!

Stealth, those hours numbers for USAFA programs seem way too high, unless they've more than doubled their flying hours!

Basic Soaring was 10 flights, averaging .3hr each. Powered Flight was 13-16hrs, if I recall. IFS was something like 16-20hrs.

For some of us with our PPL already what flying opportunity will we have during our C4C year? And afterwards? can you get on the flight team during C4C or C3C

You are probably more accurate than I am, Ramius. I'm at work and going going completely from memory on the hours. My apologies.

The flying team try-outs are only available to C4Cs with a PPL or greater in the 1st semester at USAFA.

Outside of that, no other special opportunities with a PPL.

Right so if I go into BCT with my PPL i'll have the opportunity to try out? Also how many people try out for the team? Or a better way to phrase this is how competitive is it?

At what point does one do IFS?

IFS occurs after you commission before starting UPT. It is @3 weeks long at Pueblo. DUE to the new waiver system for PPLs many opt to get their PPL so they don't have to go to IFS.
