It is my understanding that you can have a POV at NAPS, but can that vehicle be something other than a car, say a motorcycle?

My question was not pertaining to the Naval Academy itself rather it was for the Naval Academy Prep school. Since we would not be midshipmen and are technically in the reserves, I'm assuming that the rules would be slightly different.

I'm sure because you would be a midshipman candidate, the Academy would not allow you to operate a motorcycle.

Are these facts or speculations?

well a mix. like i posted earlier midshipmen cannot operate motorcycles. There is no official site I could find for NAPS that confirmed the same thing, but the only logical conclusion would be since you are living a sort of simulated plebe year at NAPS, you would not also not be allowed to drive a motorcycle.

Thanks usna051 and trini1066. I just need to know because I plan on purchasing a motorcycle this summer, and it would be pointless to purchase one now if I can't ride it at least during my time at NAPS.

Why not call the Quarterdeck at NAPS and ask the duty?

I have already attempted to call administration at NAPS, but the only option was to leave a voicemail. I'm not sure how I would find the number to Quarterdeck.

I contacted a current NAPster and they confirmed that you can have a motorcycle while at NAPS. The only caveats are of course the weather and the fact that you need to take the required motorcycle safety course(s) in order to be in regulation. Thanks for all the help

I haven't been able to locate any information verifying the midshipmen candidates can have a personal vehicle at NAPS. Does anyone have any informational links they'd be willing to share? Actually I'd love to see some more info like the NAPS student brochure as well.

Recommend you really think about getting a bike before going to NAPS. First, explore insurance costs for a teenage and a bike, you won't like the rates. Second, Newport is a long, rough winter. You will only get a few good riding months before it goes into storage. Third, where do you plan to store it during the winter? Fourth, what will you do with it for four years while at USNA? USNA has a strict no motorcycle policy, that includes leave. This is enforced as much as possible. Motorcycles are not solid investments generally and loose value. There are exceptions to this, yes. But why waste money in your first year of adulthood? You won't be able to ride on base until you attend the motorcycle safety course. The wait to get into these on base can take a few months. Plus as a student they won't let you miss class to attend these. Base is strict on what courses are accepted, have you research what kind of class and plan to take this before going to NAPS or on the weekends there?

I am a rider and have owned bikes while on active duty. I have rode all over the world. Its your choice, but I would highly recommend you table this idea until you graduate from USNA. The risk of injury is there too, don't put yourself at unnecessary risk before you even get in the doors at USNA. NAPS is a great opportunity for those who are offered it. Would recommend you take the year to focus on academics, preparing for USNA and having a ton of fun... but without a bike.

They will send out all that info soon. It pretty much has everything on there that you might have questions on. As far as personal vehicles, they can have them. Most of the priors from fleet, usually have cars. That being said they prob already had them when they where in fleet. I don't know if I would take a car or bike as far as that goes.

I'm a Trauma Nurse...everytime I think about getting a bike..
A wreck comes in...and those compound fractures talk me out of it.
