Still in the game

Sorry about the TWE and nomination confusion. I hope it an be resolved with a few phone calls on Monday.

Out if curiosity- CA-22 rep is Nunes, right? From his page I saw the following:

"After a congressional nomination is made, it’s then up to the individual academies to make their final decision. When that decision comes and you have succeeded in receiving an appointment - the real test begins. ......."

That looks like a competitive nomination slate. In any case it sounds like the letter from Nunes says "principal" so there is clearly something amiss!

Good luck in reaching a positive solution!

Still waiting here in Oklahoma-4. No mail today. Although the possibility seems dismal, still waiting.

My DS was WL today here in Oregon. Any thoughts on how many candidates are WL and how many move forward? Thank you for all the support, comments and the best to all our DC!

The number WL'ed is always larger than the number who will be accepted off the WL. Basically, it comes down to yield. The number ultimately offered appointments could be zero or could be in the double digits. USNA won't have a good idea until May 1 (when acceptances are due). Unfortunately (or fortunately), the wait continues.

Well, I have one for the ages! My DS returned from the mailbox holding a dreaded TWE from Naval Academy Admissions dated April 1, 2014. Upon opening, he read "...you have been selected for our wait list." Definitely not what he was wishing for or expecting. Disappointment is not the word I would use to describe his present state of mind. Bewildered? Maybe.

The PROBLEM...my DS is the Principal Nominee from CA-22 for the USNA and a Competitive Alternate Nominee for the USMA. Without going into details, he significantly exceeds all qualifications, and, as the letter communicates, he is now deemed qualified by the Board of Admissions. If our understanding regarding Principal Nominees is correct, then the TWE was in error. He has emailed his RC, BGO, and MOC.

So what happens next? Since my DS received a a TWE, then it seems reasonable to assume another candidate from the district slate received a BFE. Now what? The possibilities sicken me.

Asking Moderators and BGO's: is our understanding of Principal Nominees correct? Could this be anything other than an error?

You are not going to believe this but the VERY SAME thing has happened to my daughter. Principal nomination in hand (doublechecked the wording on it today) and got the waitlist letter in the mail today. Plan to email everyone to see what happened. Seems really odd this happened to two principal noms.

A plebe I talked to while on my CVW to the Naval Academy during October 2013 said that he completed his application on January 20 then received his appointment in mid-May. He had a very all-or-nothing scenario in his head though--since he did not apply to any other schools, he would have enlisted in the Marines if USNA had not accepted him. The point is, there is still hope!

Rocatlin...if you don't mind me asking... in regards to you mentioning the TWE was very generic, what did it say? Mine was actually long and went into all the reasons I should reapply next year. Just wondering if that is the standard letter of regret.

His was long too...

" your record was quite impressive, it is not competitive for a final offer this year"

"proceed with plans to attend a four year college or university"

"enrolling in technically-oriented curriculum"

Lists all the classes he should take -- which mirror the AP courses he took in high school and made A's in.

Advises to retake standardized test if combined score was less than 1300 for SAT and 28 for math. His was already over that.

Advises of other path for Naval or Marine Corps Officer, etc.

Sounds pretty generic since he basically surpassed all of those. He is going to contact his admissions counselor for more specifics.

I think it is more of being in an oddly competitive district this year that had 5 early offers of appointment.

Just an additional note, he got an unsolicited invite and attended a CVW in September. As the forum has stated, CVW invites are considered a good sign, but doesn't always lead to an appointment.

Wow! Keep us posted on the resolution.

HappyinKC,

Well, we know exactly how you and your DD are feeling right about now. Numb!

I know Admissions must be up to their necks in alligators, and that errors are bound to happen, but I am truly disappointed in at least one aspect. Knowing the experiences of other PNoms and related timing of events, DS was concerned enough in early March to email his RC. In hindsight, I now know he received the brush off company line response, or the suspected discrepancy would have been discovered then. I believe there must be ample reasons for the RC's ineffective response, but that fact doesn't eliminate DS's anguish.

I expect your DD and my DS will get through this and likely meet on I Day.

Wow, you came back to this thread, after posting this on page 133:

LOL this thread has become nothing more than a rejected parents support group

You're certainly bold.

Happy and With,

Even more odd when you think that maybe 10-15% of the appointees are members on this forums.

DS emailed his admissions counselor last week and got an immediate response back as to why he thought he received the TWE. He said his file went before the board several times and though he was competitive it came down to his class rank and being from a competitive district (TX). DS class rank is in the top 20% with 3.9 unweighted GPA in a very competitive school. AP classes (all A's & B's), co-captain varsity soccer (since 10th grade), track, MCJROTC, tons of community service, good ACT/SAT scores (700's), and NASS.

His counselor encouraged him to reapply and to take same courseload as plebe year and to make all A's and B's, preferably all A's, and try to get any type of leadership opportunities possible. He'll be in the Corps at A&M so I hope all will balance out between grades and Corps. It will definitely give him the challenge he needs to stay competitive.

Preliminary app has been submitted for 2019 so the roller coaster ride will continue for another year!

Same TWE for Reappliant

My DS received the same TWE. Being that he was a Reapplicant I was disappointed they used the same form letter they use for high school applicants. Would have been nice if it had been more tailored to his situation. I know admissions is busy, but from my perspective it truly borders on laziness or disrespect.
Of note, he did everything the form letter said to do after getting the TWE the first time around and the answer was still a "no," so keep that in mind as your DS/DD vows to reapply. Round 2 was only marginally easier to take than Round 1.

Another Primary Nominee TWE "Waitlist"

Well guys the same thing happened to my DS. His nomination says the following:

"Dear Mr. DS, I am pleased to inform you that based on the recommendation of my Military Academy Screening Committee, you have been selected as our primary nominee to the United States Naval Academy and also as a nominee to the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Military Academy. The Academy will make an Offer Of Appointment and will notify you directly if you are appointed. We are proud to announce that you have also been chosen."

When we first received the nomination back in December I questioned the MOC rep because I found the last sentence strange and if "principle" and "primary" the same thing. He to told us congratulations and that DS will be receiving a appointment to USNA and that "principle" and "primary" are the same just that each MOC uses different wording.

Several months go by expecting to receive a congratulations call from the MOC for being appointed to USNA but he calls congratulating DS for being appointed to USAFA. DS was happy but USNA is his first choice so asked the MOC if he knew when he would be hearing from him again for USNA. He told him most likely in the next few weeks. Yesterday by our surprise instead of receiving that long awaited call, DS received a TWE "waitlist".

So my question is to BGOs or anyone that would know, what should we do? Has this happened before? I was told that primary nominee and principle nominee are the same thing just different wording. This was told to me by the MOC rep.

Well, come Monday morning in the yard, I suspect at least one staffer will wish it had been a snow day. Given the low percentage of candidates that visit this site, the likely numbers of related errors will be well above the three identified thus far. Did someone set a stack of files on the wrong table?
