Traveling to NMMI

Hi All,

Getting a little ahead of myself here, but I am on obsessive planner! I enjoy it. I also spends hours trying to save $5...can't help it!

Can anyone make any suggestions on the best/most economical way to travel from the East Coast (NY) to NMMI.

Anyone with experience bringing their sons/daughters down? I would love to hear some suggestions!!

Travel to NMMI

Congratulations on your DS attending NMMI next year. Ours is a sponsored prep for KP there right now. We are awaiting his acceptance to KP this week. Although a formality it is a bit nerve racking!

Your DS is very lucky to get the prep slot. NMMI is a GREAT school (rated the 2nd best JC in the country). He likely will love to hate it (as our DS does) but well worthwhile. He will make some great friends that will also be sponsored preps going to KP as well as sponsored preps going to the other service academies.

Regarding your original question, Roswell (where NMMI is located) is not too easy to get to. There are flights (usually 1-2 a day via American Airlines only) into Roswell. From California, they are fairly expensive. The other option is to fly into Albuquerque and drive approximately 3 hours there. Once there, Roswell has a number of hotels, restaurants etc.

Thank you for the reply! It is great to hear sooo many positive things about NMMI. I am quite hopeful that my son will have the same great experience that I keep hearing about from everyone else!

Good Luck...I know it is just a formality, but exciting to get the "official" appointment in your hands!! I will be keeping my eyes open for a celebratory post from you once your son hears!

Already ahead of you momma120. Cheapest flight but not most convenient is jet blue JFK to Albuquerque direct and then renting a car for the 2.5 hr drive to roswell. Flight is around $300 rt. Southwest also out of Baltimore direct to Albuquerque has better times for flights and seems to be 20-50 dollars more. Anything to roswell with transfers from our area is $700 plus
 
You can also drive. It will take about 3.5 days each way depending where on the coast you are located. Head west on I70 to Denver then south on I25. Look for the giant alien spacecraft hovering overhead.:biggrin: We'll be there in August as well, out DS is on a Navy Foundation scholarship.

Congratulations to your son on the Navy Scholarship! That is great!!

I don't think I would survive 3.5 days in the car! Not for me!

Does anyone know when they are to arrive in Roswell?

Harbor, are you going to NMMI in August or are you already there?

Our DS started there in the beginning of August. That is when they have all the sponsored preps attend. They are there about a week ahead of the rest of the non sponsored folks. During that time they do a lot of assessment exams to see which classes they should be placed in. They also start to do some drill, inspections etc. It is a little less strict than the following week when everyone else starts. This goes on for about a month. During that time they cannot call on the phone but can send and receive mail. In September they have parent's weekend in which they are done with Indoc. From then they get a few privledges as RATs and then make rank after their first semester.

Let me add my congrats also.

I have great news for you! Sponsored MMA preps come to NMMI free. The USMMA will give them an e-ticket here. I strongly advise that route as opposed to making your own arrangements and requesting payback. I also advise they come by themselves. Once a Prep gets here they "belong" to us. No family members helping them move in the dorms, taking them out for dinner, etc. While this may seem cruel it is the exact same proceedure all the service academies use.

I will add that Roswell has three flights to Dallas, TX each day. It's not that bad getting in and out of this place.

Oh my....well that's a horse of a different color!!

LOL, my son will probably be happy about it...me, not so much! Oh dear! Let's see, do you recommend that we come down and visit the school with him before then? Maybe we should. Is there an opportunity for that? Can you tell that this is my baby and I'm having trouble letting go?

You may contact CPT Heimann at 575-624-8357 or email him at coleh@nmmi.edu to set up a campus tour. CPT Heimann handles Preps and ROTC/ECP recuitment. We give tours all the time.

I need to clarify a previous point. When the new cadet signs in with us (read: matriculate) they begin their training program and are cut off from friends and family. Prior to matriculation they have free access.

How did you handled, if applicable, high school awards ceremony/graduation where the academy bound students get presented the award from the academy reps? I'm thinking prepsters count as well? Once our DS officially accepts - will there be a formal packet sent with the official paperwork? Also, I'm not sure how to 'word' graduation announcements correctly...etc.
 
Our DS did not receive any formal recognition at graduation in the ceremony other than it being noted in the program along with all of the other students as to where they were going to school. Not sure if there is anything like that from NMMI. You will receive a package in the near future with an acceptance letter and one that will need to be returned to NMMI that your DS accepts the offer. There will be a bunch more paperwork that will be sent to fill out as well. It took a week or so once our DS verbally accepted to start getting the package of forms.

We did finally received an appointment letter along with the response form to be returned on May 1st and a NMNI brochure. Now that I know he doesn't report until August - I can breath a little easier.

What was noted in your DS's graduation program - NMMI or USMMA? I feel that both should be noted but it brings confusion (for the outside world) and printing space might be limited. Thoughts?
 
It had him attending NMMI. It does get confusing for people. Here in California they think that he is attending the California Maritime Academy! USMMA is not as well known as the Big 3 SAs but that is usually a good thing for those trying to get in. Far fewer to compete against for slots.
 
Haze...the announcement at our DS's graduation read "has received an appointment to The United States Merchant Marine Academy's Prep program".
