ADHD and DODMERB

Does anyone have experience with seeking or achieving a new or updated diagnosis with respect to ADHD and disqualifications? Is it worth the effort? Our DS has been off meds, grades have gone up in successive semesters off meds, no disciplinary problems, etc.; but does not meet the 24 month timeframe for being off meds and has been prescribed more than 24 months since age 14. Any suggestions?

When will your son meet the 24 month requirement for being off Meds.

Since his Scholarship is a 3 year it will not go into effect until the start of his sophomore year at the earliest. This will be the time he will sign a contract and will be required to be qualified through DODMERB. Will he have been off his Meds for 24 months by that time.

Every file is unique. However, it was our understanding that all 6 qualifications had to be met for ADD/ADHD not to be a disqualifying condition. Since you cannot meet the 24 month maximum after the age of 14, it is my understanding that a waiver will be required. You won't know until you try. Good luck. THese are the current ADD/ADHD regulations, I believe:

29. LEARNING, PSYCHIATRIC, AND BEHAVIORAL
a. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (314) UNLESS the following criteria are met:
(1) The applicant has not required an Individualized Education Program or work accommodations since the age of 14.
(2) There is no history of comorbid mental disorders.
(3) The applicant has never taken more than a single daily dosage of medication or has not been prescribed medication for this condition for more than 24 cumulative months after the age of 14.
(4) During periods off of medication after the age of 14, the applicant has been able to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average without accommodations.
(5) Documentation from the applicant’s prescribing provider that continued medication is not required for acceptable occupational or work performance.
(6) Applicant is required to enter service and pass Service-specific training periods with no prescribed medication for ADHD.

Thanks for the replies. Despite the fact that DS would not sign a contract and draw benefits until Fall 2015, at which point he would have been off meds for over 24 months, he has DODMERB paperwork and a requirement to complete med process now. So I guess, he gets a DQ or remedials and then we either get a waiver, no waiver or re-evaluate when time cured. I am kind of confused by the meeting all six conditions thing. Actually seems like meeting some would preclude the need for meeting some of the others, but, processes are processes.
