If the TWE mentioned that you are not offered a slot for the academy, or any predatory programs, is it possible to get an offer in a month by a long shot if somebody declines their appointment? Or is that just for people that received the TWE without mention to not being eligible to any prep programs.

Thanks! Hopefully that did not sound confusing.

Haha. Only confusing part was I think you mean prep programs rather than predatory! :)

Wait list

I don't believe there is. I believe that if a person declines an appointment then they go to the wait list.

Can't say for this year. However, back in 2010, DD had been TWE'd for USAFA. We did not expect anything. Put a deposit down at another school. May 2nd she got a call, she had 5 days to accept her appointment. She will graduate this May. Chances are small, but it can and has happened. She was not wait listed, I want to make that clear. As was said earlier, USAFA, I don't believe wait lists.

Same thing happened to a classmate of DD last year. End of May, he got a phone call and had something like 24-48 hours to decide. I believe it was actually on the last day of school.

So when somebody declines, who do they go to for a replacement? Somebody that has gotten a TWE?

My DS last year got denied, and so accepted his appointment to West Point. About a month later, he got a letter saying he got an AFA appointment. I called the school to make sure it wasn't a mistake, and he was thrilled. He called WP and explained why he had to change his mind about their program and go with AF. The only thing I could think was that the first appointee from our district must have accepted somewhere else, so he was next on the list.

There was no wait list, or prep school notice - just a rejection, then later an appointment.

I think I read on this forum somewhere that a replacement is not necessarily identified. USAFA gives out appointments with an expectation that some will be turned down; based on their experience, they will give out X appointments with the idea that they will get Y acceptances. They don't give out "just enough" appointments. I believe it will often depend on whether they need to fill a slot for a particular nominating source.
But I'm not an admissions expert; just something I think I read here.

Do they ever give out too many and withdraw appointments due to a lower than expected decline rate? Just curious.

In recent history and to my knowledge no. DD was class of 2014, this was one of that last large classes to enter USAFA. I believe it was just over 1400 admitted. With sequestration and other happenings, it not unusual for them to let quite a number go for various infractions or low grades. Not sure of the exact numbers left in that class, but I am pretty sure it is below the 1000's mark. Some will also decide on their own to leave prior to commitment of their C2C year. They find it is just not for them. USAFA has congressionally established limits on the number of cadets allowed. In the past this was not firmly adhered to, now it is.

Remember that there are laws prescribing the # of appointments and how they are 'charged'. Let's say that Candidates #1 and #2 are nominated by their Congressperson. Suppose #1 is offered an appointment which is charged to the slate while #2 is offered an appointment which is charged to the 'Qualified Alternates' slate (aka the national pool). If #1 declines their appointment, their slot can be filled by another nominee (TWE recipient) from the Congressperson's slate or the slot may be deferred until next admission cycle.

If candidate #2 declines their offer, it is rare that that slot is replaced.

CONGRESS MANDATED THAT ALL SERVICE
ACADEMY ENROLLMENT BE MAINTAINED AT 4000 CADETS

AS A RESULT, CLASS SIZES ARE ABOUT 300-400
CANDIDATES SMALLER THAN PREV YRS
(Sorry about the CAPS, copied and pasted from a website)

Thank you for clearing that up, as well as everybody else that posted!

So for the prep school: if somebody declines a USAFAPA appointment, does it just not get filled? Does it go to enlisted? Is that what we see when people get a update in May/June?

Thanks a lot!

According to DD's ALO, the USAFA has been drawing down for 3 years now. They're in pretty good shape right now. USNA and USMA are starting their draw downs this year so they're having a little rougher time of it.
