Principal Nom- Wait List

Like a couple of you on this thread, I received a principal nomination and was ultimately Wait Listed for USNA. Although this is quite disappointing, I am still in the game. Does anyone know how many candidates have accepted their appointments thus far? Using previous years as examples, how many candidates are usually selected off the Wait List? Are the principal noms who were Wait Listed at the top of the list?

If you are a principal nom, you are the vacancy winner. How can you be wait listed? Perhaps you were not the principal nom...or your MOC doesn't do a ranked slate...maybe your MOC liked you best, but the academy ranked by their standard and you were not the vacancy winner.

Principal Nomination and 3Q with No Appointment

Mom3Boys-

There are at least 4 posters on this site for which the Naval Academy is not honoring the Principal nomination.

It should be interesting.....

I don't have a horse in the race though I am rooting for each of them!

USNA an my MOC confirmed that I was a principal nominee. This is the explanation I received from Admissions:

" There was an unusually large number of principal noms this year, and that in combination with re-redistricting and a smaller class size, means that not all the principal noms have received an Offer.

After May 1st, we will know more about where the actual class size as students accept/decline their offer. The principal noms without an Offer are on our waitlist in the event that space opens up. This includes both USNA and NAPS."

I an astounded USNA is wait listing some principal nominees. I was always under the assumption (like I'm sure many others were) that 3q with a principal nomination was the golden ticket. There must be some wiggle room in the law for USNA to be able to wait list these principal nominees. It will be interesting to see what the total class size is when it's all done.

It would make sense that those principal nominees who were wait listed would be the first to come off the wait list if space opens up.

The thing that annoys me even more is that I am 3q and have a principal nom.

I am sure it's very upsetting to you. You had what you thought was a sure thing, now it's not. I would have to think USNA is trying to get all the principal nominees in and you would be toward the front of the wait list. Squeaky wheel gets the oil. I'd certainly try to get a face to face meeting set up with your congressman to discuss the situation with him directly if at all possible. Parents included as well. Better to do it now before all wait list appointments are made by USNA. Good luck to you!

Do you know for certain that you are 3Q? Did admissions confirm that for you? I only ask because I remember from some earlier posts that you weren't positive.

This is the first I've heard that they mentioned NAPS as well as USNA.

I'm sure this is confusing and frustrating for you, and I'm sorry you are in this situation. I am hoping for a positive resolution for all the candidates in this position.

I was medically and physically qualified and my BGO said I am overqualified for NAPS. I hope I do get off the Wait List.

I wonder if the MOCs who designated principal nominees that were wait listed had someone else from their slate admitted instead of the principal, or if no one from the list got an appointment. Do any of the known principals have any info on this?

Good question. Also, I can't say for sure, but I think at least one of those affected mentioned that their MOC happened to have more than one vacancy this year. I wonder if that had any impact.

I would venture to say that most people have the understanding that, as long as one is 3Q, that a principal nom is the "golden ticket" as River said, and to find out otherwise must be very difficult and disappointing.

I was wondering this as well. DD got an LOA in Oct and appointment in Dec. She was not, however, the principal on the slate. She gave up her appointment in favor of USAFA a few weeks ago, so I suspect if there was an issue, it was resolved by that action.

This whole scenario is very troubling.
For some reason I keep thinking it's the MOC who messed up. Or more likely, a communication snafu between your MOC and USNA. I would think if it was as your MOC presented it to you, the Academy would be all over it. Has anyone pointed fingers at the other? Or has anyone explained where there might have been an error?
I am curious to see how this works out. Maybe USNA is confident they will have a spot for you come 1 May-hope so for your sake.

He wouldn't be wait-listed if he wasn't 3Q. He also wouldn't be wait listed if he were otherwise normally eligible for NAPS (because he wouldn't be 3Q in that case). USNA screwed up. I'm also sure they're hoping to correct it once they know who had declined. I'm confident there are people who will decline to attend other fine institutions like Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford, and University of South Carolina.

My DS is out of the game but I am fascinated reading all this as he is reapplying. How could they not anticipate the number of Principals they would get? My guess is it would basically be the same every year give or take a few for new MOCS that may do something different than their predecessor. It sounds like they are passing the buck a day not owning up to a big mistake.

I certainly hope the situation is rectified. What a bummer, getting a principal nom, being sure you will receive an appointment, and then being wait listed! It seems like somebody messed up somewhere along the line. Good luck to those in this situation! We are pulling for you!

Still rooting for you gavigane14! Hoping you are there July 1st. Does anyone know if this has ever happened before?

I understand that he wouldn't be wait listed if he were 3Q, but I was confused by what the OP said that was part of the explanation offered by Admissions.

Why did it even mention NAPS? How does that play into the whole situation?
