I received my appointment 3 weeks ago. Two days ago at a party, I experimented with marijuana. I was foolish for even doing it, and I will never do it again. I'm so scared right now because I understand how important it is to be honest, and I plan on coming clean to my parents soon. I also plan on being completely honest when I fill out all of my forms.

What repercussions do you think this will have on my appointment?

Note: While past experimentation with marijuana is not necessarily disqualifying, current use detected during your Medical Evaluation by DODMERB will be disqualifying.

Any abuse of drugs or alcohol after you sign the 2030 and before In-Processing Day may cause us to withdraw your appointment. If you are appointed and subsequently involved in an incident you must report it to the admissions office immediately. Should that occur, you would not be entitled to any travel expense reimbursement or travel home at government expense.

If you admit to using drugs after you received your appointment, you will lose your appointment. JMPO...

Basically this is on your own honor to admit it or not.

Basically this is on your own honor to admit it or not.

Except for the drug test...

"on your own honor"...that is the point isn't it? We need self controlled honorable leaders who follow orders and tell the truth.

From the USAFA web page...Character is "the sum of those qualities of moral excellence which compel a person to do the right thing despite pressure or temptations to the contrary." At the United States Air Force Academy, we'll teach you to evince character in everything you do.

Honor Code: We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does.

Honor Oath: We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does. Furthermore, I resolve to do my duty and to live honorably, (so help me God).

Spirit of the Code: Do the right thing and live honorably.

RECERTIFICATION AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT

If you are appointed to the Air Force Academy, you will be required to complete a new (paper) copy of AF Form 2030 with your full legal signature upon entry into the Air Force Academy, and recertify that what you verified on your original submission is still true.

Except for the drug test...
I agree completely with the need to be honest about drug use and to fill out all documents accurately. That said....I don't believe that a one time use of marijuana will show up on a urine test 60+ days after use. JMPO...

I have seen people turned away on I-day for failing the drug test. It isn't pretty, and it does happen. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Figuratively speaking. I was in contact with someone who's child was there and turned away for a positive drug test. Never heard from them again.

In 2011 there was a cadet to be that was sent home on Iday due to admitting they had smoked weed after receiving their appointment. I was told this information by an instructor at the academy. I didn't "see" it.

If you don't report yourself but the information becomes known at some later date, I would guess you would be seperated at that time.

What LITS said!

I didn't "see" it.!
Not surprising. I doubt anyone other than those directly involved with the in-processing of cadets on I-Day know for sure how many admit recent drug use or fail their drug tests. I think we can all agree that anyone that waits until I-Day to admit drug use or that fail a drug test.....will be separated and sent home....probably at their own expense. Not a good idea to wait until I-Day to "come clean" about this stuff.

My opinion is probably a bit harsh, but if you couldn't make it for a few days without blazing one, you're not going to make it in the Academy in a state where it's legal-ish.

Not gonna sugar coat this but when you signed your form 2030, you were warned to stay away from that or else you'll have repercussions. IMHO, you should fess up, talk to your ALO and get it off your chest now. As a fellow appointee that's what I would do. You knew the risk, you took it, now it's time to face the music. Don't hide it, that won't help you, that'll hurt you a lot worse later down the road. Best of luck my man

...WELL THAT WAS DUMB!

Actions have consequences. You knew the military doesn't approve of illegal drug use. You were appointed. You knowingly violated the law.
That kind of decision making doesn't exactly inspire confidence from leadership or people who you might make life and death decisions for.

Exactly what raimius said. And if they do take away your appointment, then that's what will happen. I'm sure your ALO can try and help they best that he/she can to keep it, you earned it, you blew it, now you need to prove that you still deserve it.

Throw yourself on your sword. You showed poor decision making X3!

You not only did you use MJ, you went to a party where MJ was being used and you didn't leave immediately... and you got high while knowing very well you were violating the code of conduct you agreed to when you asked your nation for a free education and commission to lead America's finest. I see that as three very bad decisions.

Don't start your adult life off on a lie. Some other great kid is waiting on the list... and didn't fire up a doobie last week. Just consider your actions to be fate telling you something.

I'm not trying to sound "mean". But a person goes through the entire "I want to go to the academy" process; the whole application process; the whole appointment process; goes to a party and tries marijuana for the first time; and NOW, they decide to find this forum and make their "FIRST POST" to ask if there's going to be a problem...........

Maybe they're a regular a "Re-registered" as a new poster to avoid embarrassment. Maybe they wrote this first post during their "Lunch hour". (6 hours ago). And maybe they got their answer and didn't feel like making a 2nd post......... Or maybe they are a troll.

i don't think the OP is seeing any of these responses past the first two. The answer isn't what he/she expected to see.
It's really an unfortunate situation - self created - but unfortunate. If the OP does come back on, then do the honorable thing and contact admissions. You won't know what they will do, but you DO know what they will do if you lie about it and they find out. Think about the first time you get a high security clearance and they ask you if you've ever used illegal drugs. It's just not a pretty thought.

Seriously - you don't want to break the honor code on your first day ... well, you never want to break the honor code.
