What is ROTC like? I'm thinking of doing next year at college.

It's really a great opportunity while you're in college. Great way to meet new people fast with similar interests. Get to wear a military uniform proudly. You're committing yourself to a higher calling. There's just so much to take from ROTC in college, that it all can't possibly be put in a post.

Thanks I'm thinking of either doing ROTC and become a officer in the army chemical corps or a coast guard officer

There technically is no Coast Guard ROTC. You may want to research a bit more.

I would maybe go into ocs for the coast guard

If you want to be a ChemO the army is going to love you...

Why?

Chem Corps is considered the least attractive Officer Branch in the Army by some, it is usually the last on cadets list.

Now that being said I have known a couple Chem Corps officers and they did not mind the Branch once they were in it. You sometimes are assigned a lot of staff duty, it all depends on which unit you are at and what opportunities you take advantage of.

So most likely if I do rotc they will give me that branch?

Everyone Please Chime In

Why is this branch so problematic? And what is staff duty in this context?

OP ...What do you think about New York?

Clarksonarmy would probably be a valuable source of info.....even more so if you are into hockey....

He has over 25 years of experience with the Army and is currently a ROTC recruiter and instructor.

But fair warning if you ask a foolish question.....you're going to get a smart A$$ remark....

So far your questions are fine.. :shake:

My son branched Aviation, is a 1LT, has been at his unit now for 6 months, his resume so far include:

Planning the Thanksgiving dinner
Planning the BN 5K
Planning the DIV. Golf Tournament (This took 2 months)
Planning the Kiddie Spur Ride
Planning multiple Family Days
Planning several promotion ceremonies and Hail and Farewell's
Re-organization for non deployment duties
Total inventory

Today his big job is to pick up the Shaved Ice and Cotton Candy Machine for Friday's Family Day, had to do two Power Point Presentations for the Squadron Commander and XO just for these two machines. Son has mentioned that his life revolves around Power Points.

He has been able to squeeze in a few flying hours in between all this.

My point, you'll all be doing a lot of Staff Work no matter what branch you select.

If he was looking for experience in organizing golf tournaments, why didn't he just join the Air Force?

That's what I told him, although I guess the best Military Golf Course on Oahu is on the Marine Base....go figure. They have the best beach as well, that's where his Army Squadron had their Christmas Party....had to plan that too with several Power Points.

Because of their importance in their training and readiness cycle, the Air Force requires officers of much higher rank to do the planning.

Thanks for the plug...I guess I am a little prone to being blunt.

Here is a blog one of our graduates from last year is writing. He's got branched Chem and is stationed at Fort Hood. http://seanempey.blogspot.com/
It's good to have an idea about what you want to do in the Army, but you don't know what you don't know. Take the class freshman year, ask lots of questions, and by the time you are a senior you will have a good idea what you want to do in the Army. I recommend you come in with an open mind.

I will be studying a degree in emergency management in college and chemical corps seems like a good fit.
