Hello, I am a Mom new to this forum and not sure how to navigate it. My son's AROTC application status is still BOARDED. Will there be anymore boards and decisions? Is the scholarship award process still active? Hoping someone can help - thank you!

The final Board was in March, all the notifications have gone out. If your son's status says Boarded then he did not receive a scholarship from the National Boards.

Has your son been in touch with the ROO from any of the schools he has applied?

There are rare cases where a Battalion may offer a scholarship to an applicant that was not selected prior to school starting, it doesn't happen often.

Does your son plan on attending a school and still enrolling in ROTC without a scholarship? If he does tell him to work hard and be in the best shape he can so when he starts school he can do very well on the first APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) Do well in school and have a good first semester GPA, participate in everything he can in ROTC that first semester. Battalions often have scholarships they give out to new student/cadets based on how well they do in the APFT and GPA.

Tell him to hit the ground running, do the above and he will put himself in a good position to take advantage of any opportunities they can offer.

Best of luck to your son.

I can only add that at my DS’s school, 10 guys and gals were awarded scholarships before the Christmas break in their first semester. Keen and fit the two biggest factors with college awards.

Just to echo what has already been shared... DO NOT GIVE UP!

Depending on a number of variables (school size / stature being one of them), the Batallion may very well indeed have some 4-year and 3-year scholarship monies left to allot PRIOR to Fall Semester.

My DS contacted the ROO at his #2 and #3 in-state universities (not ivy league or big 10, just decent state universities with 16,000 and 24,000 students enrolled) after he realized he was not selected for the last national board (April).

Long story short, he had a phone interview at #3, and an in-person interview at #2 in May. Ended up getting a call July 3rd from BOTH with a 4-year scholarship offer. Had to pick one (took his #2). They both awarded at least two each 4 -year and 3- year scholarships.

He also inquired at his #1 selected school (Iowa State), but the ROO told him that due to the high-demand (larger big 10 type school) that they never have any monies returned from the board to re-award. They sometimes have some additional monies in Fall semester for a 3.5 or 3 year however. So, moral of the story- don't overlook the smaller in-state universities and their associated Batallions.

Good luck!

I am new to this as well and have been following the board for a few months. My daughter did not receive a national scholarship but was contacted a week prior to the March board by the ROO at her #1 school asking if she was interested in a campus-based scholarship if the Nationals didn't get her the results she hoped for. She had her PMS interview at this school in December and at the time it was her #2 school. She instantly fell in love and it was quickly her #1 choice based on her interaction with the ROO.

She did not get the National but was just awarded a campus-based 3-year yesterday, just in time for commitment deadlines. She has also been informed she has a very high chance to be upgraded to a 3.5-year before the end of Fall 2014 term. This particular school offers 4 year room/board incentive to all scholarship cadets, regardless if it's a 3 or 4 year tuition scholarship. The most important thing I can say is to stay in contact with the ROO's at the school(s). My daughter was told that they were very impressed with her dedication and persistence. (a.k.a. Mom's nagging payed off big time!)

From all that I have read, it seems to be a rare occurrence to get a 3-year AD campus-based scholarship well in advance of getting to campus. This University has been amazing and understood our fear in committing to an extremely expensive private University with no guarantee of a scholarship award during freshman year.. They did everything they could to get us answers prior to the May 1 commitment date and she just signed off on her acceptance letter today.
