Hi all, so I found this site fairly helpful last year when looking for the do's and do nots of plebe summer, what to bring what its like etc. I'm a member of USNA 17! so if you have any questions I'll help answer to the best of my ability. Just message me if its anything sensitive or ask on the thread. I'll answer as quick as I can, but know plebe life is a little busy, so I may be a little slow. Anyway goodluck, see you around, and ask away.

How much is my class, USNA 2018, being bashed by the current mids?

Honestly not that much, it has pretty much died down, some of your class mates made crazy twitter posts which caused the start and then fake accounts were made which added to it. Just don't post about USNA on social media and you should be fine. Upper class do look at your FB and twitter beforehand so keep that in mind.

Time management, they purposely give you too much to do and not enough time. Its a journey to stay on top of things but sometimes prioritizing and accepting that not everything will be accomplished is a must. Its difficult to figure out should I work on my mile time for the PRT or study for a Chem test or learn PRO KNO for this weeks quiz, its not all going to happen so figuring out what its highest on the priority list is one of the toughest things to do.

What is the Brigades view and/or attitude concerning both NAPSTERS and Foundation Preps Mids?

We love Napsters and Foundation. It is often difficult to tell who is or is not a Napster or Prep kid after Plebe year. My roommate is a Napster and it is very helpful to me and my classmates to have Prep and Naps kids here since they know the ropes a bit better than the rest of us.

Could you please explain the idea of PRO KNO (which means professional knowledge, right? I'm not sure) to me? Is that something the upperclass make you do or is it an academic class?

Pro Know is professional knowledge. It is a book that plebes receive and each week there is a quiz on the chapter. It is mandatory for us and the quizzes are given Friday nights in company area. It is a way for plebes to learn about different service communities, service selections, jobs, and random Navy things. It's not too terribly difficult.

In complete honesty, how hard is the actual physical aspect of plebe summer? Some people are saying it is actually not that bad and that as long as someone is in decent shape, it shouldnt be too bad.

Besides leadership, if you don't take away anything from your USNA experience ...time management and prioritization is a MUST!!! It only gets more difficult and complex as you take on more RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY as an officer.

depends on who you are

When you are asking if things are hard or not, it completely depends on the person. Your experience/challenges/albatrosses will not be the same as everyone elses. You will be excellent at something and you will be awful at something. Period! The good news is whatever you are awful at your Co. buddies will help you get better at and everyone else will be awful/excellent at something. It is important to rely on each other especially during plebe summer. For example, when 'pushing deck' the ones who were good at it would place their feet under the chests of their company mates who were struggling. My son's company mates gave up alot of their precious free time to help him pass the plebe yr swim tests.

My son thought the PT aspects of plebe summer and beyond were by far the easiest. He can run non stop and do pushups and pullups forever. The O course and E course were FUN. He never shot/saw/touched a gun/rifle and got the highest ribbons for both.

Screaming was hard for him....He was always yelled at for not yelling loud enough.

The Pro-kno was hard because he was always a step behind over plebe summer and once made the mistake of staying up past light out which earned him a punishment which put him further behind in memorizing that book. (binder with like size 8 font...) It was also harder for him plebe yr because tests are Friday nights and he had games Friday night and they redid the format of the make up Sunday make-up tests.

Swimming (plebe year not plebe summer) was very difficult for him.
(My son is the seal and his company mates are the dolphins.)

Running shoes

My daughter states that her running shoes for PS do not need to be mostly white. In the parent information they say they do - which is correct?

Plebe summer is difficult on an individual level for everyone. Run a lot before you get to the Academy that is super important. Be able to do pushups and situps, you're going to do a lot of those. I was a bad runner and ended up broken for about half of the summer so I ended up in Swim Pep instead of normal pep swim pep is terrible, even if you're a good swimmer. Climate change affected a lot of people, so did the new combat boots for running so expect blisters, which will effect your physical abilities. Plebe summer is doable, its a mindset you need to be in always thinking you can do it. Just run, and expect to be always doing something, Plebe summer is a marathon not a sprint which is what makes it tiring and difficult, but you can do it.

Can you explain what "swim pep" is vs. "normal" pep. Are you saying if you get injured running they make you switch to doing swim workouts during plebe summer?

If you get injured enough that you can't run, in my case a stress fracture, they do alternative workouts in the morning. Normal pep is lots of running pushups circuit type activities while swim pep is lots of pushups abs and swimming. Both are focused on cardio and strength. Everyone has to do workouts in the morning and most of the time you only get swim pep if its a prolonged injury or one that prevents you from doing multiple normal pep activities, otherwise they have normal pep but when everyone is running you could urg (crew) or bike sometimes.

I think the PE requirements for all four years are documented here - http://www.usna.edu/athletic/_files/documents/6100%20Graduation%20Requirements.pdf.

DS did wrestling and boxing in the fall, and I am not sure when, but I guess at the beginning of Spring semester, with no prep except spending some time in the swimming pool each summer, my DS Plebe passed the Plebe swim test. If I read the doc correctly Plebes have to swim 200 meters in 5 min 12 seconds or less to validate and DS came in at 5 min 12 sec on the nose thanks to his shipmates cheering him on when they realized he was close.
