USAFA Expands Soaring Training

A program to "expose cadets to aviation earlier in their cadet careers and motivate them to explore careers in aviation" seems wise to me. It has surprised me how many 2016ers have expressed no real interest in flying.

What would be really cool is if they opened these programs back up to AFROTC cadets like they were before! I think that would help more AFROTC cadets gain interest in flying.

When did the AF decide there was a shortage of cadets from ANY commissioning source that were interested in flying? Perhaps there is a shortage of cadets interested in other rated AFSCs like ABM and RPA....but pilots.....I don't think so. JMPO...

Concur, there is no shortage of pilot applicants among the commissioning sources.

I just finished the intro to soaring program. I really enjoyed it and appreciated the chance to spend some time at the airfield before this summer.

The biggest drawback I can see is that AM 251 during the year is cut, which basically limits the chance to become a soaring IP to cadets who get soaring during the summer.

Does it help get a pilot slot by going through soaring? Does it help to be an IP? Or do your grades and ranking matter more? Or is it the 'whole person' concept again?
