How many NROTC scholarships were awarded this year?

Does anyone have a sense for how many NROTC 4 year scholarships were awarded this year?

Any how many applications?

Just trying to get an idea of acceptance percentage...is this more or less competitive than the Naval Academy?

To my knowledge they do not normally release these numbers to the public, although I'm sure there are a very few here who see them.

My gut feel is that they are both more and less competitive depending upon how you view it. There is no geographic distribution required by law for NROTC scholarships as there is for the academy. Because of this, competitive candidates in a competitive district would view NROTC as less competitive because it's "only" a national competition. Although I know for in-school (sideload) scholarships the average stats for awardees are a little higher than the academy admissions averages, I do not know that this also applies to the 4 year high school scholarships.

The only way to really know is to apply and see what comes out the other end. I know of folks who were not selected by the academy who got NROTC scholarships and I also know of folks who were selected by the academy who did not get NROTC scholarships.

Thanks for the stats jiller59. Our son did not get selected for Tier 1 major (nuclear engineering). SAT scores 740 math 670 verbal, ACT 33, class rank top 3% of 239. GPA 3.6 unweighted, 4.2 weighted at end of junior year. 4 AP classes senior year. MCJROTC all four years of high school - currently Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer. Lots of community service through MCJROTC. But very limited sports and he waited to complete his application and interview - just before the January 31st deadline.

Thank you also kinnem. We don't know any other applicants from our son's high school who applied to Naval Academy or for ROTC scholarship.

Less than 18% of over 4,000 applications in 2014

A Navy LT Commander spoke at our High School last night and mentioned that over 4,000 applications were received this past year for the 4-year Navy Option Scholarship and less than 18% of those received an award. So that is around 700 awards or 1/5 chance.

NROTC MO

At Ceremony for my DD the XO of 12th District flew in for her ceremony.

My recollection (always iffy) of his remarks is ~ 150 selected for NROTC MO.

I do not know how many applied and were Board Ready.

26 from 1st round.

12th District had 4 selected - 1 in 1st round (DD) and 3 in 2nd round.

He said this was one of the smallest selected pools in some time (20+ years) and that they have been told the number will be greater for 2014-2015

I am surprised that the NROTC number is lower than AFROTC since the Navy is bigger than AF I would have thought their number would be at least 1k, or even around 1100.

AFROTC also has an 18% selection rate and they award @900 scholarships. They board over 5000, but it is unknown how many apply and either do not finish or deemed non-competitive.

That being said, I think it is more common with NROTC to give side load scholarships (aka AFROTC ICSP ) than it is for AFROTC- AFROTC has cancelled their ICSP boards twice in the past four years because the pot of gold was used up through the HSSPs.

Here is the document that bests answers your specific question about how many 4 Yr. were awarded this year, the answer is 900. One assumes the goal of 900 set in January was met within some tolerance. Whether there was a change in Goal midstream from 900 to 700, who knows, but the ratio of 18% * "over 4000" leaves room for a lot of variance depending on how far "over 4000" the applicant pool was.

It is interesting to me that the Side Load scholarships seem to be a greater number than I expected. Assuming most of the Side Loads come from the general student population within Units (that is, not MSISR, ICP, etc.) the ratio of side loads to 4 year is about 37% (215 side loads / 577 4 Yr. non specific). That is a much larger % than I recall seeing in the past. If one aggregates side loads with 4 year scholarships, in a given year about 1115 scholarships of one type or another are accepted by students -- 900 4 Yr. and 215 Side Loads.

Based upon my post immediately above, the chances your son will receive a Side Load scholarship while at college are not bad!
