I am a senior in high school and I have been appointed to USMA. Two of my friends will be at USAFA next year and our high school wants to put an article on us three in the paper. However they want us to wear suits for the picture. I think we will look stuck up and unnatural in a picture at school in suits. Do y'all think suits is a good idea or khaki shorts and a tshirt of our future school would be better?

I'm not an academy parent.....but if you are taking votes my vote goes to the khaki shorts and a tee shirt from your respective academy.....it makes you more relatable ..

While I don't disagree with ERAUMattmom, if they want you to show up in a suit... then you show up in a suit. You might try having the three of you make the T-Shirt and shorts suggestion to them, but ultimately you go with what they want.

It's how they want to portray you.

I recommend not saying anything that would make you sound stuck up or overconfident.
That would end...poorly.

Take the advice from this thread seriously!

This sounds the cadet somebody was telling me about today that was actually a poster here on this forum......didn't make it thru his first year at the academy after telling everybody that the Academy was his first step to being the first man on Mars.....

WHAT a coincidence.....( that somebody just shared the story with me today)..NOT that this OP will encounter any problems....

Yeah, "Mars Boy" was a pretty infamous story. Any hint of arrogance from incoming basics will be dealt with harshly. Saying anything that implies you don't think the academy will be challenging or that those who came before you are lesser/had it easier is going to offend a lot of cadets.
Part of the response will be overreaction from hurt feelings, and part will be to make sure we weed out those who don't take their responsibility to those around them seriously enough.

My opinion is wear a suit. You us want to look your best and a suit will present a nice appearance. Keep in mind that you now represent, yourself, your family, your community/high school AND now USMA! You should be proud of your accomplishment and willingness to make this commitment. With that said, Stay humble as many, many difficult days lie ahead. Best wishes for you and your USAF classmates.

Wear the suit.

Say this: "What a great honor this is to be selected to go to the USAFA and hopefully one day serve my country as a member of the world's greatest Air Force. When I look at the folks who have gone there before me, and the quality of the cadets who are there now, I am honored, thrilled and humbled that I was selected to go there as well. I will give it my best effort to succeed there, working together as a team with my fellow new selectees to meet and overcome the challenges ahead of us. I know it will be tough, but this has been my dream for a while, and I have to give it my best if I want to achieve that dream".

Safe, simple, humble, and just the right amount of respect for the opportunity you are getting.

Good luck to you, and remember to "Smile" when they take the picture! This IS something you should be proud of! :thumb:

Oh, and don't ruin it by posting something stupid on Facebook or whatever it is on the inter-webby thing-a-ma-gig you young kids are using these days. The cadre is watching out for you on there as well!

WEAR THE SUIT.

You are not going to a beach party, a bbq, or a springtime luau.

However they want us to wear suits for the picture.
Wear the suit......and get used to wearing what you are told to wear.....when you're told to wear it. USMA will be doing it for the next four years and the Army for five after that. Might as well start getting with the program now.

I agree with those who say to wear the suit. Shorts and a t-shirt? Come on, have some class. You are not just going to college, like your classmates. You are going to West Point and USAFA and will be officers in the best army and air force on the face of the earth! Just be careful what you say!

The Suit...

The "Last Suit" you'll ever wear. Remember the picture ins't about "you" its for the school records and a moment for your parents to gloat about you.

Off topic, but whatever happened to Mars Boy, did he commission?

On topic, wear the suit.

Very late (probably too late), but if this is for the *school* newspaper, then forget the suits.

Even if it isn't, I'd still opt for non-suit.
