I just wanted to start this thread to give any waitlisters an opportunity to report on any appointments. Good luck to all!

My DS has accepted to USAFA and declined USMA but his first love has always been USNA. So we sit with our fingers crossed!

Thinking today is the day those on the WL will begin to hear from USNA!

Based on experience from prior years, it is usually mid-May at the earliest before anyone hears.

Remember, there are always fewer appointment slots available (if there are any) than WLers. Thus, it's easier to send decide who WON'T be offered one of those slots than who will.

The above said, if yield is too high (i.e., far more acceptances than expected) notification could come quite early.

All in the Numbers...

Based upon prior posts and USNA published information:

1. The target starting population for the Class of 2018 is 1,175, a reduction of 25 positions from the Class of 2017.
2. USNA transmitted 1,300 offers of appointment to candidates for the Class of 2018.
3. The most recent (published) rate of acceptance (three year mean) is 83%. 83% of 1,300 is 1,079.
4. IF the acceptance rate is similar to prior published years, then approximately 96 positions will be filled from the waitlist. Yes, that is always a very big IF.

As USNA1985 writes, there are always fewer positions available than those on the waitlist. In past years published, the list has fluctuated widely from 90's to 150 in population.

From here out, it is only a guessing game. So, DS is moving full speed ahead with Plan A-3.

From our personal experience, usna1985 is correct. Our DS was notified May 15th. He was a reapplicant. Had attended Greystone Prep. Had a USMA appointment in hand. Thrilled to be offered an appointment to USNA! I had met another parent whose DS from the prior year had a USMA appointment but really wanted USNA. He waited until just before I Day, hoping for THE CALL. It never happened and he is commissioning as an Army 2nd Lt, this May. It is good to stay hopeful, but wise to have plan B in place.

Would you mind citing all that info? I always heard that around 1500 appointments are extended. That may very well be different this year, but I'd like to look at that information.

My DS received his waitlist letter and USNA stated 1300 had received appointments and class size would be 1175.

it seems that this whole process has been crazier this year. Have any of the waitlisters heard anything yet? I would think after May 1, things would start to shake out.

Lines 1 and 2 were on all the waitlister letters, but where do the statistics from line 3 come from? Those are the most interesting. Thanks

I looked at profiles for Classes of 2015-17, did a little math, and came up with an 86.5% yield. If this year is similar, 86.5% yield from the 1300 offers would be 1125.

I think technically the math would be the other way around: 1175 desired class size divided by 86.5% historical yield to imply that there will need to be ~1358 appointments or 58 people off of the wait list. Otherwise we would be 1175/1350 or 87% yield.

Just like that, I theoretically took 8 additional people off the wait list! :thumb:

That's great! I failed to mention that math is not my strong suit -- DS's, but not mine!!

The Wait List Is Moving!

Wanted to post this from another thread. They are starting to pick from the wait list!

The waitlist is moving...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DS on the waitlist received his BFE.

Although he had already changed course to attend his A-3 option (UC Berkeley, School of Engineering, Nuclear Engineering), he is predictably changing back and accepting the offer of appointment.

Good luck to everyone...

Has anyone heard if they have made any appointments from the NAPS/ Foundation list yet? Is nearing the end of May and they said mid May people would start hearing.

My understanding is there were 52 offers for Foundation given, with all accepted. That said, I'm sure anything could happen but it appears unlikely.
