USMA Director of Admissions

Congratulations to all the parents of the Class of 2014. Only a few short weeks and your sons and daughters will be graduating and join the Long Gray Line as the newest Old Grads and begin their mission as Leaders of Character in our Army. Equally exciting is the advancement of the plebes to yearlings, the yearlings as they move into the cow class at Affirmation and the rising Firsties as they take the helm as the senior leaders of the Corps of Cadets. Thank you all for your support to our Admissions teams over the years in helping us set up events in your local areas and supporting the future classes entering West Point. On that note, a quick update on the Class of 2018: we expect to have 1,200 new cadets enter with this class on July 2nd, one of the most competitive classes and also one of the most diverse in recent years. We had over 15,000 applications and tendered over 1,400 appointments. Nearly 50% of the class will enter with the designation as a scholar and 25% designated as leaders. In other demographics, over 20% recruited NCAA athletes, 21% women, 12% African Americans, 10% Hispanics, and 7% Regular Army Soldiers. Again—congratulations to the Class of 2014. Go Army!

What exactly is that designation as scholar or leader you mentioned? And is there by way for us to find out what category we fall in?

High ACT/SAT Scores

Like the Director mentioned, "the most competitive class", so the scholars are those with above average ACT/SAT scores. What is history in the making, 21% of the class will be women. This the highest ever.

Scholar, Athlete, Leader. It's pretty easy to know what you fit into, just look at your transcript and resume against what WP looks for. I know I fell into the Leader category, because I had so many leadership activities. I was a good student, but I didn't get a 2400 SAT and was not valedictorian. Many others are, many others though, aren't, and we're recruited athletes. You'll know when you apply where you fit in.

DIVERSITY

It appears diversity was a main goal for the Class of 2018. Big increase in the female percentages, along with an increase in African Americans and Prior Enlisted. It should be a GREAT class! Go Army! Beat Navy!
