Houston, We have a problem.

DS has a blue passport. He needs a red for CULP. DS sent all paperwork and blue passport back in Feb. to get a red one to go along with the blue. Neither have been returned. DS called the National Passport Information Center last week and they told him it was mailed April 30th. He has yet to receive it. And it was mailed priority. He has a passport locator number but no tracking number for the package has been issued. He's been trying to stay on top of things, but now I'm starting to worry. He emailed and was sent an automated reply stating that the website was unable to reference his application due to website issues. There was a number attached to the email. So he called that number and got an automated message. Of course, no human on the other side.

Anyone else has experience with this situation? Any suggestions on the steps he should take from here? He only has about 20 days before he leaves.

Are you sure he needs a red passport? To my knowledge the blue one will suffice.

Depends on where you're going. I only need NATO Orders.
But your not alone with the administrative pandemonium that is CULP. I'm leaving in June and we still don't have matching dates across the chain of command for our trip.

I just looked up some previous postings RE: CULP. It looks like the necessity of a red passport is dependent upon where you are going.

DS is going to Mongolia. His human resources person told him he had to have a red. She has really helped him a lot. He's been in finals all week, so he hasn't had time to meet with her. He is also trying to take care of his business on his own. It's just Mom who is getting antsy and wants to help him.

I wish it would have been a darn tracking number instead of a confirmation number. Yeah, they are different. Didn't know that. There is no way to get info on a confirmation number. Ughhh.

I was just wondering if anyone had some suggestions so that he could jump on it Monday morning.

My son's red passport never came to us. It was waiting for him Fort knox. He also had to leave it when he returned and Cadet Command holds on to it.

How do we know if it will be at cadet command? We had to send birth certificate and blue passport with the application. What about those?

Call CC tomorrow and ask for the CULP passport guy. I can't remember his name, but he handles all the passports for CULP and can help track down where it is if he doesn't know directly. If you send me a PM tomorrow, I will give you his number when I get to the office, I don't know it off the top of my head. They are supposed to be holding them at Knox

Someone there will be able to help.

I just may. DS has been trying for two days to call CC. He has left messages but no response. Called passport office and told him to call his commanding officer. They could not help him!! What??? I wouldn't believe it if I would not have been with him at the time of the call. so he called the HR person at his battalion. She said that it probably went to Fort Knox.. Ok I get why the red one would go there. But what about his birth certificate and blue one? Will he need both to travel? Or just the red one?

This is our first rodeo so we are kinda nervous. Well Mom for sure. I'm so OCD about getting everything in order that it gets the best of me at times. I just want everything in order and for him not to have any complications. This is such an awesome experience for him, I want it to be pleasurable and hassle free. Thanks for letting me vent.

Just to cover one of your bases you could request a new certified copy of his birth certificate. Not sure everyone's county is so fast, but I used an online request system for a couple copies before DS started NROTC and received them within a couple of days. I may have needed to fax copies of some docs - can't remember for sure but I do remember it was fast and easy.

The year my son went, the PMS from his school actually go involved in the passport issues because they took so long and some of the kids trips were coming up quickly. He also was going on one of the trips.

Have your sons cadre get involved. They may be able to get answers quickly.

Yeah I could do that. It's just the hassle and frustration of having to do that because of someone else's incompetence.. But I guess I'll no other options.

We'll CC did email DS today asking for his tracking number. If we had that, we wouldn't need to ask where it is.

DS talked to battalion's HR person yesterday. She is aware of the situation and suggested the steps his is already taking. If DS still doesn't know anything by Monday he will call her again. He's trying to handle this on his own, but he isn't getting very far. Ughhhh.

Cajun,

Were you able to find out or confirm what address they actually sent the passport to.

Like cjs, our son's passport never came to our house, everything was sent straight to Ft. Knox. We never had any confirmation of this, just were told that the passport would be given to him when he arrived at Ft. Knox.

Not a bad idea to get another certified copy of his birth certificate though, just in case.

No we called the passport office yesterday and they couldn't help us. Imagine that. We believe the red one will be sent there. At least that's what most people seem to say. But what about the blue one? Do you think they would all be together? Weren't you nervous not knowing? What happens if he gets to Knox and it's not there?

And yes. I will get another certified birth certificate. It looks like we'll need one to keep on hand.

My son never sent his blue passport when getting the red one.

My guess is that they will be both sent to Ft. Knox.

I don't think we gave it much thought, he was told upfront that the passport would be sent directly to Ft. Knox by the Major that was in charge of his group. I guess we just had blind trust it would all work out.

I remember my son saying that one of the reasons they were sent to Ft. Knox early before they left for the trip was to make sure everyone had all their paperwork completed. I remember him saying that they needed to expedite a passport for one cadets once they arrived at Ft. Knox so I assume they have a plan if a passport doesn't show up.

Hope everything works out ok, I know that information was always a bit late or hurried when my son went, it could get stressful at times. I won't even get into the fiasco of the air travel that took place getting the 20 cadets to Bosnia, there were kids stranded all over Europe for a couple days. My son and one other cadet flew out alone, they were the last to leave KY....and the first to arrive in Bosnia, a day ahead of next group.

Bottom line, tell your son to be prepared for anything.

Oh...he had a great time by the way.

They should be together. When my red one was sent to me, the blue one was included with it. It may be frustrating, but I would take a deep breath, it will all work out. It most likely is at CC, they are pretty busy right now with CULP teams already traveling OCONUS.

Keep calling and checking in to get updates. Honestly, the CULP passport coordinator is really not that helpful. I'd check for you, but only the CC folks can go through their database looking for them.
