Chances of getting into West Point

Hello, everyone I'm new here, I've browsed the forums here before but this is my first actual post here. Anyway I will be applying for all three of the academies this year so I was wondering if anyone could give me a realistic idea of my chances to get into one of the service academies.
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Class Rank: 8/120

SATs
Math: 670
Critical Reading: 680
Writing: 590

Advanced Classes:
Honors English 9 & 10
English Compostition 1
English Composition 2 (Will be taking this next year)
Honors Global 9
Honors Chemistry
AP Physics
AP United States History
AP Biology (Will be taking this next year)

Sports:
JV Baseball for two years
JV Volleyball for two years, one as captain
Varsity Volleyball for three years (Including next year) I will also most likely be captain of this team next year, and I won an MIP award this year
Varsity Tennis for two years (Including next year)

Extra-curricular Activities/Clubs:
National Honor Society
I also will most likely be attending Boy's State.

Any honors or AP math? West Point is heavy on the math and engineering.
 
Your stats overall are better than mine and I got accepted into the class of 2018 so you're in good shape. Bring the writing score up and run for senior class president. Make sure you find a good amount of people to write you letters of recommendation. I think I submitted about 11 or 12 letters, ranging from teachers, bosses, to academy grads

Hi Colinmcd. Will there be a place to upload the letters of recommendation on the portal?
 
Yes there is. There are about 5 options for documents to upload and one of them is letters of recommendation. It's easier and more convenient than mailing them in.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can jump in, but my understanding was that they only look at the letters they specifically asked for?

Well they asked me for 3 evaluations, from a physics teacher, from an English teacher, and a math teacher. I know they definitely looked at those. But they didn't specifically ask for letters from anyone, I just uploaded every letter that I got and I didn't have any issues.

This may sound really bad, but many areas with a lot of money, really good schools, or lots of ex-government/military types tend to be competitive.

Socal, Chicago's North Shore, parts of New England, parts of VA near DC, etc... tend to be super competitive.
 
Any district could be competitive in any given year depending on who applies. With that said, historically, based on number of applicants/normal distribution of those applicants, some districts are more competitive than others. Nor Cal can mean a bunch of different things: some of the Bay Area districts and out in the Sacramento area can be really competitive, others not so much. Keep an eye on the events page for your region and you will get to meet your admissions team (RC and FFR) in person, along with some of your competition: http://portal.dean.usma.edu/admissions/Pages/FarWestEventsMain.aspx

This is a great document, but keep in mind that it is for those applying to USNA. There is a lot of overlap with USMA, but there also are some differences.
Also, it was written a few years ago. I don't know about USNA but there have been some changes in the USMA admissions process since 2009.

LORs are not discouraged. Send them if you want to but they carry little, if any, weight because the RCs realize that LORs are going to be favorable to the candidate. A candidate is not going to send a negative LOR or ask for a LOR from someone who would not give them a good recommendation.
 
I was referring mostly to the 'what are my chances?' types of questions. The answer is that no one here can 'guess' what your chances are regardless of which academy you might be applying to. Applications involve more then GPA and standardized test scores. None of us were ever meet these individuals or interview them so it is impossible to say how that aspect of the application might go.
