Do I need to bring civilian clothes, or will we be wearing the t-sirts the entire time?

In the "Items to bring with you" section of the packing list and instructions it says to bring 1-2 sets of civilian clothes for travel and academic workshops

The civilian clothes is mainly for you to travel to and from the academy to your house. The rest of your time at NASS you'll be wearing stuff we give you at check in.

As per a recent email:

Please note, you must bring one pair of ankle-length pants and one set of closed-toe shoes for the chemistry workshops. Additionally, female bathing suits MUST be one-piece.

GoNavyPro,

What type of water work will they be doing? Also, thank you for your comments, and congratulations on finishing Plebe year!!!

First off Thanks! I'm glad it's behind me now haha. To answer your question, this year they're adding in a pool portion to the mock "Sea Trials" day that they'll have on Wednesdays for the Candidates. Since this is new to NASS (like we didn't have a pool phase when I went through) this is sort of a toss up experiment to see what will work and what won't. So things are subject to change as we see how the candidates react or perform with this. Also as of now I believe only sessions 1 and 3 will have the pool phase (subject to change of course) due to logistical reasons.

As of now, things to expect in the pool would be being comfortable treading water (possibly passing around a ball or weight of some sort between a group), normal swimming laps, and team work exercises where squads compete against other squads. There should be no exercises that would require prior competitive swimming experience.

One thing they made clear to us is that if a candidate does not know how to swim or is uncomfortable at any point in the water, they do not have to finish/participate in this event. The academy understands that some people might have not had the opportunity due to unknown circumstances to learn how to swim or have much practice in the water, so if a candidate does feel uncomfortable and sits out, this will not hurt them admissions wise at all. Just note if you do come to the academy there is a swimming class and anything you can do to learn before then would be beneficial.

My DS is an aquatics rat, so he's happy to hear this. Are speedos acceptable, or board shorts only?
Also, Which pool will be used?

DS will be attending session 1, and is excited to be headed back there. Thank you for the insight, I hope it works out.

Awesome, I'm a swimmer too and the pool phase of plebe sea trials was more fun than difficult so I'm sure he'll enjoy it too.

As for the swim suit, I would go with board shorts over a speedo or a jammer (even though I know swimmers hate board shorts, it's just to keep everything uniform throughout the candidates).

As for the pool, that's part of the logistics problem I believe they were having. As much as I would like it to be in the competition pool in Lejune, I believe it'll more likely be at the outdoor pool over by the Naval Station (over by where the endurance course is located on the other side of the Severn River)

All good information, thank you!

Any pool is better than the dungeon. Lol

Haha yeah, there's a possibility they might use the Water Polo Pool in MacD as well (a very small possibility that is), but they won't use the dungeon since it's just too small and shallow of a pool. And plus nobody likes the dungeon anyway.

When did you receive this email? I will be attending session 2 but have received no such email. Is it likely because I was not slotted for any chemistry workshops?

You will probably receive the email a few days before you are to report for NASS. DD will be attending Session 1 and received her email two days ago. It is a general email containing all the information sent in the confirmation email, and it confirms that all paperwork has been completed. It states to print off the email, or your original confirmation email, in order to board the bus, or gain access to the Academy if driving. The email contains transportation info, packing list link, parent tour info, and phone numbers of the duty officer in case of any travel delays.

The information about the pants and closed toe-shoes (and one-piece female bathing suit) is in bold. It looks to be a standard email sent to all participants regardless of their workshop selections.

Check. Thank you!

KAtrina,
I am bringing two pairs of running shoes. One pair is not so good, the others are very good.

2 pairs of running shoes is a must ! Last year when I picked up my DS from NASS one pair of shoes went straight into the garbage . They got so stinky and gross from mock sea trials.

Good luck and enjoy . My DS loved his experience and is now USNA class of 2018!!

I am going to be attending session two, I was wondering if there is a specific way that we are supposed to dress for arrival; is okay to wear jeans and a Tshirt or should I wear khakis and a nice shirt?

Naval Academy Admissions has posted several hundred photos on their Facebook page of Session 1, which started this past Saturday. There are pictures of PT, the CFA, and participant arrivals. You can see what others are wearing. DD opted to wear her khakis so she didn't have to pack them. Plus her khakis are the kind you can zip off to make shorts, which is convenient.
