Air or Mini ?
Wi Fi or Cellular
32GB Minimum but 64GB Recommended ?

Anybody have any suggestions ?

I guess it ultimately comes down to how much $ you want to spend .

Yeah, i'm debating on whether to get wifi or cellular. Any thoughts on that specifically?

According to our cow, the cadets will be using their WP cadet funds to purchase iPads in the fall. I would hold off until you receive official word.

DS/CC preferred the feel of the Mini

Chose the Wifi + Cellular >> At West Point will mostly be on the Wifi, but wanted the option for cellular if needed >> Travel or Wifi down

Went with 128 GB

Sprint had same price as the portal and we have our family plan with Sprint >> Used Fidelity 529 College Savings $ >> Allowed expense as it is a required item for school

For incoming 2018 class, what exactly are these going to be used for? Since they will have a lap top, that I assume they will take to class, then will these be used in the field? Just knowing their purpose would help in the decision, especially with portability and screen size. Does anyone have knowledge as to what they will be used for?

IPad Air

famof8, initially the IPads will be used for the history and military science classes. As time goes by, they will add more. I would suggest the IPad Air over the mini due to screen size. The 64GB should be more than sufficient and definitely with wifi.

The memo to existing to cadets lists three classes which it is mandated, and also indicates more to come.

They also indicate it will be for active content, not just pdf's.

So it's a bit of a judgement call on size. I've moved from larger tablets to 7", and would find it hard to go back. Just easier to read on from a holding perspective, and not too challenged on typing.

Whether to add cell coverage is a judgement call. $140 more typically to the purchase price, and you do get a gps. (Boggles my mind that wifi ipads don't have gps....)

I'm a huge fan of the mini and my mini served me well.

As for cell? Everywhere at West Point (literally everywhere) there is Wifi. Once your iPad is setup for use on the USMA network you'll have internet access on it nearly everywhere at West Point that you might want to use an iPad.

That said, if you're not planning on using your iPad a lot outside of West Point, paying for cellular service would just be a waste of money. It'd be wiser to get the Wifi only version and use the money you're saving on a cell plan for buying a nice cellular-enabled next gen iPad once you graduate.

Just because your ipad has the cellular capability doesn't mean you have to turn it on and most place cell providers use shared datta plans and only charge $10 more for another line

From using an iPad for MilArt last year, cellular is a must. Any time the Internet went down (which happens a lot in the barracks) I could jump on my iPad and still get stuff done. The same goes for traveling- trains, airports, etc are not known for great (or safe) wifi. If you are ONLY going to use it to read the MilArt textbook, you don't need the cellular, but why pay that much money for something that wont work everywhere?

So are cadets still considering buying one on their own instead of getting it during the year through their account? Can they then have it shipped in for the ac year with whatever content is already on it? Games, etc?

New cadets 2018 were given the option of purchasing the iPad through their cadet account or bringing one (from the approved list) on R-Day, turning it in, and receiving it back after CBT. I don't know if one brought from home could have existing games, etc on it. I don't know the specifics for classes of than Plebes.

I was curious because we are getting DS a new one this summer so his sister can have his old one for school. (New requirement to bring a device) It should still be perfectly good next summer if he is accepted for 2019. I am always trying to think ahead budget-wise.
