JROTC Question?

After some needed humiliation, a question came up that makes me very curious. Though, I don't doubt that JROTC can be a strong point for a candidate and can perpare people; I wonder how USMA/AROTC truly see it? The program is portayed as "if you fail here you wont fit in the military". Another thought that I have heard from instructors is "JROTC is the best thing for the academy". Many people in my program seem to have "eggs in one basket" so to speak and do little on average outside the program. A few(numerous enought to mention) kids think that they can have 3.0 and be a staff officer and get a full-ride scholarship. I dont think one thing can be that potent, If not prove me wrong. Is JROTC the bread and butter of the academies?

JROTC is always potrayed as perparing people for the military, very well. Numerous comments have made me wonder is it over-glorified and is overdone.It would give me a better insight if people who been to an academy or ROTC could point out how it is seen.

When you get to the Academy or ROTC, don't bring up JROTC, and whatever you do, don't ever say this is how we did it in JROTC.

You speak as if it's negative? I would assume bringing anything you did in highschool would be taboo; Or is this just JROTC? You seem to have contation they disfavor it. I NEVER would have guessed this, its definetly better to get an inside view.

Would it even be worth it to include in a resume for them?

I was at a college fair, a not so military looking JROTC cadet approached me and asked me something along the line if he will get a special treatment at West Point since he is a LTC in JRTOC. Without laughing I said no. I was in my dress military uniform and he didn't even call me sir.

I think the challenge with the JROTC program is if you make it too military kids will turn away - after all average high school kids are not into discipline and serving in the military.

It's better than a chess club, but don't expect any special treatment other than possible nomination.

You answered what I expected it to be; Just another cadet. I bet goes the same for stuff like class presidents and eagle scouts too. You may be at the top of the heap in high school but your starting over.I didn't really expect any special treatment would ever come from it but rather a good foundation for military diciplince. I am sure any program for training officers is going to have you start at the bottom of the pile. I could only see it helping your drill, the responsibility of uniform etc while your at the academy. It will be a shock to these COD kids with a staff officer position and a 3.0 when they realize their only pursuit does not carry them that far.

From an Admissions viewpoint - JROTC is considered an Extracurricular Activity which is part of the Leadership component of your file.
As in other ECs, WP looks for leadership roles that you have in your ECs.
So, for JROTC to really help you in your file, you should be in a leadership position like Company Commander or above.

I know a guy who was a PL his senior year of JROTC and got accepted to USMA. But to be fair, he had a 3.8 GPA with a 30 something ACT and tons of other extra things like multiple sports and volunteer hours. So he did more than just JROTC.

I definetly for ECS and academics could have a shot at a appointment with JROTC. Have a 3.8,boys state delegate(or will be), eagle scout, captain of two teams ,400 service hours, president and vice president of clubs, etc.
