The next step? Nomination??

So about two weeks ago I submitted my online application to the Academy. I was notified the next day that my application was competitive and that I am now an applicant.
What is my next step in the process? Is it time to start applications for nominations?
I do not believe the applications have been released yet.

Also, when in the process do I take the CFA? And the medical exam?

Help!

My advice is to start/continue taking your ACT or SATs and take them often. The Academy super scores but your nomination sources don't - at least ours didn't. Then start practicing daily for your CFA. No need to rush - just make sure you're as good as you can be when you take the CFA test. Our DS took his test in the late Fall after it cooled down. Use the summer to make yourself as competitive as possible.

Make sure you are documenting community service / volunteer hours too. Our DS knocked o I think over 400 hours at the food bank alone over 1 summer.

Nominations: You can begin those when your MOCs applications are available.....usually online and probably sometime over the Summer. There is no need to rush those. Make sure your qualifications are as strong as you can make them (SAT/ACT, volunteer hours ect). Just make sure that you pay close attention to when the deadline is for completing the nomination applications and finish well before that date (I'd say at least 2 months). Don't forget that you will likely also need your letters of recommendation, so if you don't have those....time to start chasing teachers, coaches ect. Not always easy to do during the Summer.

CFA: When that section of your application is available you can download the forms and schedule a coach to administer the test. Do not take the CFA until you are completely ready.

DoDMERB: Once a certain %/amount of your application is complete, you will be able to schedule your exams. If it isn't currently available on your application then you probably still need to submit more information/documentation to USAFA. This is something you want to get accomplished as early as possible. If DoDMERB says you aren't qualified, or if you need to apply for waivers.....the earlier you discover this the better.

Aglages is right. The biggest hurdle over the summer is getting your recommendation letters. Get those now while you still have access to your teachers. Also very helpful to get their contact information (cell/home numbers and email address they check regularly). It was not uncommon for both my DS's to have to make edits (informational, grammatical, etc.) and have the teachers correct them. The more letters you get, the better. You can then choose which suit the circumstances better. (You'll be sending a LOT of these letters out). In some cases, maybe only three are allowed. In other cases, you may be able to send more.

I might also advise you to provide teachers with a list of topics to address. We all know it's leadership, academics, attitude, civic involvement etc. but your teachers may not. Also gives them a "checklist" so they don't inadvertently leave something out.

Start working on your essay. This will be a "Why I am Seeking an Appointment" document. Work on it, fine tune it... THINK about it. This is also a good soul-searching exercise. This essay, or some edited form of it, will be used several times during the application process.

Document all your extra-curricular activities during your high school years and keep adding to it during your senior year.

The rest of the summer process will involve the MOC process and completing portal requests as the come.

As in all other things, the earlier you complete each step the better.

Good Luck!

I guess it's too late to sign up for a Summer Session, but that would be a great thing to talk about during your nomination interviews. Make sure you check with your Senators and Representative to get all the details of what is needed and by what date for the nomination process. Each will have a slightly different process, but usually one shot at each, so you don't want to miss anything.

Many of the answers to your questions are also included in the 'Instructions to Pre-Candidates' available on the AcademyAdmissions.com website. Here is the link:

I guess it's too late to sign up for a Summer Session, but

... if you are interested in Civil Engineering consider the S.A.M.E. camps, including the one offered at USAFA. The S.A.M.E. post sponsoring you pays half the registration and your airfare to COS. My DS did not get a slot in Summer Seminar, so he did Boys' State and S.A.M.E. camp instead. He is now a C1C majoring in Civil Engineering w/ a minor in Arabic. I am not certain, but I think his participation in the S.A.M.E. camp was the difference in his application package. It's a bit late to apply, but your local post may still have a slot open. Best wishes. :thumb:
