BLUE 21 FLIGHT INITIATIVE

The goal of the BLUE 21 Flight Initiative is to build greater diversity in the aviation community through targeted recruitment at colleges and universities with strong minority populations.

To be eligible for BLUE 21, applicants must have graduated from a college or university with a minimum 25% minority population of U.S. citizens in addition to the academic and physical requirements listed below.

Upon completion of OCS, you will receive a commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and be assigned immediately to flight training in Pensacola, FL. After earning your "Wings of Gold," you will be assigned to an Air Station and begin your career as Coast Guard aviator.

What are the vision requirements for flight training right out of the academy? Thanks.

Does the Blue 12 initiative select candidates regardless of their race -

as long as they graduate from a 25% plus American minority school?

Lot's of schools in our area fit this criteria.

Hey im just wondering but why does there have to be a 25 percent minority

jw thanks

Because the Coast Guard is actively seeking to increase the number of minority officers to better mirror the racial makeup of the enlisted force.

By law, the USCGA is the only service academy that is barred from using race or sex as an admissions factor.

Therefore they must look at other ways of increasing the number of minority officers.

wait does that mean you have to be a minorty to qualify?

That is very interesting! Our local college (highly ranked comprehensive college) is

25% + non-American minority. I had no idea that attending the local college could be a route into the Blue 21 initiative.

Just goes to show... there are many ways to make the DREAM happen!

Best wishes to all... it is so good to know that so many young Americans aspire to serve their country and are so focused on beginning in college, either through service academies or ROTC... and not taking the "party" route through college and deferring adulthood.

Oh, dear... did I use the word "defer" ??? That is a banned word around here now. We don't like that word! Ha Ha

WOah i just researched Blue 21 and realized how many different schools there were were 25 percent minority

Remember, for those of you interested in the Blue 21 Flight Initiative - it has nothing to do with the US Coast Guard Academy.

You must talk to a Coast Guard recruiter - not an Admissions Officer, not an AAP, a USCG recruiter.

Can anyone tell me what the ratio of airplane assignments is to helicopter assignments? I would love to do this but I am concerned about being assigned to a helicopter assignment. I dont have any helicopter training or license and have no wish to fly them. Is there a way to avoid that?
