DS received his orders for summer cruise. 12 days on a submarine beginning mid-June! Embarks from Florida.:thumb:

Woohoo! I'm sure that will be a great summer cruise! I don't know about the subs, but DS was on an LSD and they posted pics on facebook during the cruise. If you know the sub (I assume it's included in the orders) you might want to see if there is a facebook page.

I would love to see photos during the cruise, but I am wondering if I would be able to know the name of the sub - it is "The Silent Service" after all!

jiller - sounds like it should be a good time for your DS - provided he isn't claustrophobic :thumb:

kinnem - I guess things may have changed since your DS went on his summer cruise. A couple of my friends said they are spending some time on subs too (if I remember correctly).

Isn't there also some sort of OPSEC thingy about subs that are underway? I remember reading it somewhere once.

Last summer during his 3/C summer cruise he was able to spend 24 hours on a sub which confirmed for him that is what he wants to do :shake:

I am so grateful we have these young men and women willing to step into situations I know I would not have the courage to do. In a sub? Underneath all that water? Trapped like a sardine? Yikes! LOL. actually, it sounds like an adventure. I hope he has a great time!

Embarkation date is just over a week away and still no flight information.

I remember that being the case with every one of my son's summer cruises, jiller. Frustrating, but my son learned to roll with it and I just quietly repeated the motto 'Semper Gumby' to myself. Wait until he gets out into the fleet, it's as bad or worse.

Yeah, it's not uncommon. I expect the unit will expedite orders overnight once they have them.

Agreed, definitely not uncommon. I found out I was going on cruise four days before I was going, got the flight info two days prior to departure. As long as his seabag is ready to go, he'll be set when flight info finally comes around.

DS received an email Friday from "Headquarters" moving his embarkation date one day sooner and changing the embarkation port. Still no flight arrangements. He doesn't seem bothered by the uncertainty. I am concerned partly because DH and I will be on trip and won't be able to take DS to the airport. We have 3 different family members on call depending on the day and time. I also have to admit I am a "planner"; I like to have everything lined up

I realize that submarine schedules are probably variable and there are complex logistics to coordinate getting young people from around the country to rendezvous with a sub.

Thanks to everyone for the input:thumb:

DS flew out early this morning for his 2/C sub cruise. DH and I were out of town so had butterflies when thinking about young family members getting DS to the airport by 6:30 am!

DS arrived just fine at his destination late in the morning - seabag not so much! Bag caught up with him 10:45pm today. He had dinner with two other MIDNs who will be on his sub.

And so the next adventure begins!

Glad to hear all came out well in the end. Can't wait to hear how his cruise went! :thumb:

DS was picked up to head for the sub at 6:30 this morning. He had a day to get to know the other two NROTC Midshipmen that will be on the same sub. He is officially "off the grid" now. More news in a couple of weeks

Summer Submarine Cruise-NROTC

DS submarine cruise was cut short. He and the other MIDNs were delivered back to U.S. after only two days at sea. It wasn't anything they did (whew!) and we will never know the real reason, though we have a pretty good idea. At least the sub was still close enough to the good ole U S of A to bring the boys back before it took off for parts unknown. We had heard a story of a MIDN who was on a sub for summer cruise; the sub was called to duty and couldn't drop the MIDN off. He ended being gone months...I wasn't sure if this was a true story, but I now believe it is plausible:eek:

DS still loved his short time on the sub and enjoyed his interactions with enlisted and officer alike. He was impressed with their willingness to answer any question; of course that is the purpose of the training, but it is great that the MIDNs can experience that interaction. This was his first time on a fast attack sub and he was surprised how much tighter the space is than in "boomers". Fortunately he is not a big guy and could maneuver around fine.

Oh darn! So sorry to hear his time was cut short. But he does have a good story any way!
Did it help him make any decisions or was it too quick?
Are "they" finding something else to do or is that it, he's now just coming home?
Hope he enjoys the rest of his summer.

Dial the gate-DS is more sure than ever that he wants subs. Would prefer ballistic missile over fast attack if he had his "druthers" for various reasons. As far as we know, he is done for the summer. He still felt it was valuable time spent. He got a feeling for the routines and had lots of questions answered.

jiller59-Your DS still probably learned quite a bit in that short time. My DS is to report to Charleston for NPS in August without ever being on a sub. He thinks he wants fast attack subs but we shall find out in about a year. Two others from his unit that just graduated will be joining him there on the same start date. Until then he is working at the nrotc unit collecting full pay and refining his golf game.
