I want to give props to this group for helping me get to this point. DD left on an airplane today at 2pm. The experience and wisdom you have offered is invaluable. I hope that I can earn my chops over the next four years and become a valuable contributor for those that aspire to serve this great land.

Congrats to you and your basic cadet, PUM! And please know that the cadre who will be training your daughter are caring, responsible cadets who want your child's experience to be memorable and motivating. Last night I had a long talk with my daughter who will be an element leader and she and her colleagues have put in long hours planning and preparing and are thoughtful about every detail. Yes, it will be very hard but it will be worth it. Take care, rest tonight and tomorrow you get to start having a relationship with WebGuy!

Best of luck to your daughter. We certainly hope you stick around to share your knowledge with the newer classes as they move up. People like me are farther and farther away from the experience and things change every year. It is so important to keep the information and experience current.

I was looking through the pictures on the USAFA Facebook page this morning and saw a candidate struggling up the ramp wearing his boots, hauling a large black backpack, a large red rolling-type duffel, plus all of his "issued" bags of paper with the cadre right next to him screaming. I thought how great it would have been for him to have the information available here. I know that we can't reach everyone, but the experience shared here is invaluable.

Thanks to all of the parents who take the time to share what they know.

I Saw Those Guys...

I'm not going anywhere. The journey has only begun.... I watched enough video and looked at enough pictures to know you guys knew what you were talking about. At the airport yesterday, we saw another family sharing a tearful goodbye with a long man. At first glance, I thought... another cadet. Then I noticed he had a black roller suitcase AND his backpack. Knew he wasn't a missionary, as he was in casual clothes. Lo and behold... indeed a cadet without the good fortune of all your experience... He will be on the wrestling team, so, maybe it was his gear. Can't wait to get back on WebGuy... so far, just one pic of DD coming off the bus. Time to dive in.

We just got off the phone with our 2016er who is BCT cadre. He said that his Flight leadership was stunned at how many Basics failed to bring their completed Security Form to BCT. So while people on the SAF are questioning what color of compression shorts is appropriate, other Appointees went to I-Day without their Security Form. The information here truly is invaluable.
 
Here's a tissue PUM... might have some tears the next few weeks.

WEBGUY... forget the kids, the dishes, church, work, EVERYTHING. Your every free moment will now be spent combing through those pics. :)

I remember when my twins were cadre... they had some twin fun!
 
Also, remember they are not supposed to smile. Don't worry if they have a stoic look on their faces. It was July 4th before we saw the first hint of a smile. Awesome when it happens. Relax. You will be amazed at the change by PW.

Thanks for that info Dad. That is very comforting to me. This has been harder than I thought it would be.
 
It makes me feel better to know they are not supposed to smile. Not used to seeing him so serious/somber!

The first time I saw my son who was in Jaguars C, he was looking pretty dejected over a plate of food in his PT uniform. I'm thinking it was from the first Sunday lunch. The first time I saw his twin brother was when he had a bloody nose!

He was so proud of that bloody - actually broken- nose. Earned him a Snickers bar!

parents: Christcorp and others here will tell you: let go! Let them live their lives! They are adults now, though of course, they'll always be your child.

Enjoy the ride - it's phenomenal!
 
I was talking to my mom on the phone the other day about the basics, and she said she still has those feelings of anxiety and sadness for them that she had when I was in their position. I will tell you what I told her: they will be just fine! If it were easy, everyone would do it. Remember what a great challenge this is for them and consider how much they will learn from it. These are great kids, and even though they may seems semi-robotic right now, the process will change them for the better. I'm having a difficult time (as are many other C3Cs) processing the idea that we are no longer THEM, aka at the bottom of the food chain. It's a weird feeling... but soon enough your kids will be in the same position! Luckily for them, time flies!

Congrats on your success so far. Enjoy ESET! Before you know it, you'll be on the footprints making corrections.
 
You'll be amazed at how happy they will grow over BCT. By the end of Jacks, smiles will be abundant :). Just hold out knowing that they aren't going to be happy all the time, but by now, they have reached the point where it isn't hard to find the bright spots in everyday.
