LDAC done waiting go to CTLT

OK someone has screwed up and those cadets who graduated today and leave tomorrow for CTLT in other countries have no bed or housing or arrangements and we're told to find some place to nap because there is no where to put them. This mom is getting pretty fed up and I am prior service and married to a retired army officer myself so this is not my first rodeo
 
Is this only effecting cadets that are going OCONUS, is transportation to the airport arranged.
 
They were told transportation is ok for tomorrow to airport but about 40-50 cadets reporting to building 6015 were told no one planned for this and there is no housing available. They were told to "find someplace". Which is kinda what she wants to do in terms of just getting a hotel room near airport. But they also have instruction that they can't leave post and must continue with buddy system
 
They should all camp out on the base commander's front lawn. Not very good planning to say the least. Hope they still have use of the DFAC
 
Tell your kid to go demand something at a CQ. Only reason I suggest is that I know they can find room somewhere. Tell him to go squat at the CULP barracks. It's across the street from ldac and I know they have room.

If nothing from those options, I'd start heading for the front gate (in all seriousness). Walk to a hotel and tell them to go pound sand if they don't have an appropriate option. I bet he finds something before he gets off Knox, much less the USACC area.

Being completely serious, if it's still a problem, give me a PM ASAP and I know someone living TDY on Knox with 2 spare couches that can help until someone does their job.
 
After many calls to no avail I contacted DD. She and friends were told to use the "common room". They are afraid to leave post because they were essentially told not to. As of about 2000 hrs knox time they had found an empty room. (8 of them) male and female group. She says that she took a shower and is sleeping in pt gear and using towel for a blanket. She does not want me to make an issue of this but I am really disappointed in the army. As it stands she is telling me that active duty sucks and she would rather go reserve than deal with this kind of leadership. I know this is not the norm but hard to explain to a 21 yo who feels like she had a hard 4 weeks already and is leaving for korea at 0330 in the morning

I wouldn't make a blanket statement like "Active duty sucks" but it is true sometimes people or situations fall through the cracks in the military. I do have some friends who would have been AMAZING active duty officers but opted for reserves because they became disillusioned with how the military operates on a full-time basis.

However, I think at this point she is just frustrated and rightfully so. I bet a few weeks in Korea will change that.

In retrospect this was all more annoying to me than them. They have moved on from this experience a bit more self reliant and wiser. Jclrppe you are right. She I already talking about korea and waiting at the airport gate. I need to distance myself from this drama lol

Now you understand. As in life there will be many ups and downs in serving your country. In one year she will be on her own and taking care of herself once active. That will be a good feeling. Best wishes for Korea, should be a great experience.

DS tells me the same thing: Let me handle this Mom! And he too gets frustrated with the way things are run, not just with military, but public and private institutions as well. He can't understand why people want to make their lives more difficult. Just do what you have to do and things will run smoothly and easily. I guess he learned that from me being OCD:shake:

Anyway, our cadets are being awakened to the real world. Great experience for them.
 
Sorry to hear about their goat rope, but the upside is when they do commission they already will understand the term FUBAR! :wink:

I agree that this should not dissuade them from going AD. Like the real corporate world there are going to be people on the ball and some that will let big things fall through the cracks. They are naive to believe it is any better at Microsoft than in the Army when it comes to management.

The military needs people like them that can make sure through their own experiences that the crack they fell through is sealed and will never happen again.
 
Good to hear her group found somewhere to shower and hang out! I agree, as parents we seem to get more frustrated with the "managment" than our cadets do. DS is very laid back now after seeing/hearing all the FUBAR stuff that has happened over the last 3 years - me, I still get pretty worked up!

Korea should be amazing for her - hope she travels safely and brings home awesome pictures and adventures to share:smile:
 
Thanks all for letting me vent. You would think this would be old hat but when it is your own child I get a little or as husband says alot to invested

I earned a lifetime membership last year in the AHP when I spent two plus hours on the phone with a series of politely uncooperative people at a Manila call center trying to change my son's return from LDAC so that he wouldn't have to spend the night on a bench in the Chicago airport. They kept me on hold so long while trying to find someone willing to speak with me that I was able to learn some choice Tagalog phrases on the internets.

I'm sure your daughter will find Korea CTLT a worthwhile experience.

Ha! Where do I join? I just commented about that last night because I'm fretting about the fact that pictures for my DS's regiment are not being posted. :rolleyes:

Makes me wonder how our parents survived? When I went to college there was one phone in the dorm hallway. If I didn't want to be found -- they couldn't find me.

She's going to love Korea, I'd love the opportunity to go. I've had many friends either there for CTLT or as a duty station and even though the weather isn't always good, they loved it.
 
I hate to say it, but these hiccups do happen. It sucks but its the reality. Look at it this way... these are young men and women who are going to lead soldiers. They are smart, savy Cadets who will figure out a way to make it happen. Think about the young 18 year old soldiers who just graduated high school a few weeks ago and will be navigating the Army in the coming months and they are forgotten about or slip through some how. Its a great lesson learned for how they will need to take care of their future soldiers and attention to detail in planning. When our Marines deployed they had to pack all their stuff up from their barracks... so imagine returning from 7-14 months or longer in a war zone and then waiting while they find barracks room, arrange for TMO to bring all their stuff back (weeks later). All of this after possibly living at remote outposts for months or more! I think CTLT will be a much better version of the "real Army" than a training environment. Hopefully she gets some exposure during her time in Korea and sees what life is like for a Company Grade Officer and the different branches out there.
