About how long does it take for your ROTC scholarship funds to actually be applied to your account at your school? I received a two year scholarship, but I'm not even contracted yet so the funds cannot be dispersed to my school until I contract. The plan is to contract me on day one of classes, any ideas on how long before the funds are applied to my account?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Timing can vary, so verify with the HR staff or scholarship officer at your battalion that they have notified the relevant department (Accounts Receivable/Bursar, etc) that you have a pending scholarship. (Follow up with the school to make sure.)

This way you (1) won't be blocked from registering for classes and (2) your school account wont be dinged with interest charges. Most schools will not charge interest if they know ROTC will fund a scholarship.

If you are an MS4 and in the Advanced Course, how is it that you are not already contracted?

My daughters school was usually paid 3-4 weeks after the semester got rolling but my son's tuition doesn't get paid until later. Let's put it this way, we seem to get multiple "warnings" from the school's admission office about the missing payment before it's ever paid. That being said, I usually panic and call up to the school. I'm always told something similar to "you don't have to worry. We know he's in ROTC".

DS was contracted in Sept 2013. ROTC did not pay until Dec. 2013!!! We had to pay the first semester. We were reimbursed. It varies from school. Depends on your HR person and how soon you contract.

I had a very unique situation. I was enrolled in AROTC my freshman and sophomore year. Then my sophomore year I was selected for the USMC PLC program and attended that the summer between my sophomore and junior year. Unfortunately, I was injured while I was there and medically dropped from the program. So I spent all of junior year in the advanced course ROTC classes waiting to be medically cleared by the Marines in order to contract with the Army. My medical waiver came through for the Army less than a week after the Spring semester ended so I didn't get to contract or attend LDAC this year (can't say I'm not thankful, sounds like it was a letdown this summer anyway). So now, since I am DODMERB qualified I am contracting on day one of this upcoming semester.

Thank you for your help/advice as well!

Good timing, DS school just sent me a notice this morning telling me his tuition is due. I will keep you advised as soon as it is paid. Keep in mind DS is an MSII ( his first year tuition was paid exceptionally fast last year) and his HR person has been a superstar when it comes to getting things paid and done for the cadets.

It varies by school. Last year my son did not get his first or second semester tuition paid until early April. The school is used to late payments. They did not require any payment from him while they were waiting.

Cadet Command's timing on the wiring of funds to your college will vary according to how quickly the school and the HR person at AROTC get the paperwork turned in. Regulation 145 says it shouldn't be sooner than 45 days into the school term, but I've experienced personally, and read here, that it can take more than two months at some school (not counting the mess the Sequestor caused).

Almost every school finance office will have open communication with AROTC about who are the Scholarship cadets, so rarely will the Tuition payment delay cause an issue other than annoying reminders from the Finance office.

Unfortunately in case of my DS, unpaid tuition will result in a $47 late fee every two weeks. I discussed the scholarship with the billing office and they still said tuition has to be paid when due.

Depending upon the tuition, in some states that interest rate would be considered usury...

Guess my DS's HR person has a great working relationship with his school. His tuition has already been paid and classes don't start for 2 weeks. Or the school just knows it is coming and marks it paid and then handles it behind the scenes.

This used to be true for first time disbursements. HR's no longer have to wait 45 days to initiate payments and are only limited by the time it takes for the school to bill them.
