Hello all,

I contract on Friday for the 4 year Type 7 HSSP and am just wondering how long it will take to get my stipend and money for books...my family really doesn't have much now so I really need this ASAP.

Thanks so much!

It really varies depending how on top of it the det is. Stipends are paid in arrears, so if you contract on the 15th, the earliest you will see any stipend is the 1st. Book reimbursement comes in a seperate payment.

Our DS has seen his payments as early as two weeks in and as late as 6 weeks.

My son had to pay for his books on his own and then got a deposit into his account about a month after school started. I think his first stipend came late enough that it was a double payment the first time he got it. His tuition has never been paid until almost the end of each semester.

AFROTC requires the cadet to pay for the books, and reimbursement comes later.

If contracted, bursars will typically acknowledge the scholarship, and not place late fees on their account, even if paid in Dec.

There is no set time as to when you will get either your stipend or book $. It really does depend on how fast your detachment gets the paperwork in. Usually within a month of school starting, but no guarantees. As for the book stioend you can buy 1 book, 10 books or no books and you will automatically get the book stipend deposited into your account. It did drop this year from $450/semester to I believe $300/semester. You are not required to submit receipts or anything else like that either.

$300 book stipend is a bit of a surprise - first time I heard it but I verified it on military.com. Also saw type 2 scholarship is now reduced to $15,000 Max from $18,000. DS school pays difference so I don't think it will matter for him but some cadets may have an unexpected balance due.

My tablet doesn't show the article, I am just curious if they are reducing it for the classes of 15-18 or starting this year with the candidates applying for 19. I would be ticked to find out that I was promised 18k and accepted the scholarship under that premise and now I have to find 3k more.

I know our DS was the year it bumped up from 15 to 18, which was back in 08, class of 12.

It seems like the AF has come to point they have squeezed every penny possible...they are back at all of the rates of the year group that entered in 08...thank you sequestration.!
~ unfortunately most people think that the sequestration was just for that one year, when in reality it will impact the military for many more years to come.

Expect Oct after an Aug school start for both stipends and book allowance. it's never been any earlier at my son's det. It will vary from det to det though.

Be prepared to make up the difference - depending on your major, $300 can get quickly eaten up by (used) STEM books. Yes, you do have to pay first and then be reimbursed later.

The only time our DS received before Oct was his C400 year. His school always started Wed. Before Labor Day.

Not trying to get too far off the subject of book stipends - but you made me question whether I was looking at old info. The link I got this from is http://www.military.com/ROTC/1,15281,afrotc_scholarships,,00.html

However, it still shows $18,000 on http://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/types

I haven't heard anyone else talk about this so I'm hoping/assuming $18,000 is still current.

If you read that link it must be old because it states in the body of the article current as of Dec.2004.

I am going to bet it is still at the 18k listed on the AFROTC website.

Back on track.

Book stipends will be deposited at various times, but you will not receive it until after you contract. Many cadets will not contract for @ 1 week after start of school. Add @ 2 weeks for processing, thus you will have to outlay the money before reimbursement occurs.

Most people will tell you to save costs look into Chegg.com or Amazon for rentals. Also try to see if you can purchase books using ebooks.

We still haven't received our book money back yet. Anyone else in the same boat? Any word on when we will get it?

It is entirely possible the secretary did not process the paperwork.

Don't feel bad about the book $. My son is a 300 and still hasn't received his tuition $ for the semester and is also receiving last year's stipend amount every month. He did get the book $ though. Hopefully he will get caught up before this semester ends!

Don't feel bad about the delays in getting reimbursement.

My son is AD Army, he has had to, on numerous occasions, spend his own money for things including rental of a cotton candy machine for family day last July, numerous things in preparation for training they did in Alaska 2 months ago. The balance they owe him to date is over $5,000.00. He told me the other day that he got a message back from Finance that said they had insufficient funds to make payments, he just shook his head and headed straight for Finance, was told they will get to it sometime. Now he's planning a "Hail and Farewell", that balance will grow again. It's a good thing he manages his money well or he could be in a bind.

Seems like slow payments don't end with ROTC.

My DS is leaving in the morning for a 12 hour bus ride to South Carolina for a drill competition. Then they leave Saturday night to drive all the way through back home. Last year, the Navy game them $50 for a meal allowance. This year they each get $25. But at least the MIDN don't have to pay for the bus and it is a great opportunity for them to travel and meet others. Though I doubt he will feel that way 4 hours in to the journey. I just hope someone makes sure the bus has good tires. last year they had a blow out. Not a good thing to happen in the mountains they have to pass through. I know. I know. Those hardly can be called mountains. But I am a flatlander.

DS's is an AS200. His tuition was paid on time but book and stipend money is still not in.

DS also had a 12+ hour bus ride to SC on Friday, home on Saturday. They arrived back on campus 6:30 am on Sunday. DS is on the endurance team. What was your son's event?
