Anyone know the process for this?

My son applied for one his senior year in HS and didn't get a scholarship...

Now we're trying to figure out/understand the process of applying for one while he is in school. We can't seem to get a straight answer from the admin at the school's ROTC office

any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Afrotc.com should have it on their website under scholarship programs

Beware though that in the past couple of years it seems like they have canceled the ICSP board 50% of the time.
~ Basically if the pot of gold was used up for the class of 18 using the HSSP, than the chances of an ICSP board occurring is less likely. This may be why you are not getting a straight answer. They simply do not know if a board will or will not occur this year since many are now just contracting.

There is also the det. Only scholarship, but that is something they will approach him about.

It maybe not on there because HQ AFROTC has determined that there will be no ICSP board this year. As I stated before, in the last four yaersI can recall them canceling it twice. This may also be why they are being vague...they are waiting for word from upon high.

With the fact that for the 14 and 15 year groups they have offered Guard and Reserve options instead of mandatory AD. The 16 year group that just completed SFT was the 1st year group to go for 23 days instead of 28 to save the cost of per diem. Under twenty eight days and the pay system changes.

Sequestration is going to impact for years to come from a DoD perspective, and since they are having no problems recruiting cadets, and retaining them, than the scholarship is not their best return on an investment.

Our son is a cadet at a SMC. I don't know if this is how it works everywhere but this is how I believe it works at his school:

There really was no "application" process. The ROTC leadership submits all of the freshmen cadets (who did not come in with a High School Scholarship) to the ROTC HQ (Maxwell). I don't know exactly what is submitted in the package but I'm sure it is the fitness scores, GPA, and probably high school transcripts. This happens early in the year. Out son was advised that he had received an ICS in February of his freshman year. This past year, the 1st year cadets were awarded the ICS in April. The ICS is retro to the semester in which it was awarded, so you will receive a nice refund if your cadet receives an ICS.

The information about the ICS was removed from the AFROTC website a few years ago. I remember looking for it two years ago for a friend and it was gone.

One thing to add......this year, there were students in AFROTC who were awarded an ICS in April and then advised that they had not been selected for SFT in May. Most of that had to do with the new process of having to declare rated or non-rated as a part of the SFT selection process. It was really tough time for these cadets in particular, having been awarded a scholarship one month and then learning that their AFROTC career was over the next month.

Also, the "word on the street" is that there will be fewer HSSP's and more ICSP's going forward but that is just "rumble". Given the current state of things, I'm surprised they are giving any at all.

I would advise your son to email the one of the staff in his ROTC detachment and inquire as to the process for ICSP nomination and selection.

Thanks, I did tell him to do that...he's also going to try to talk to him in person.

good to know about the AFROTC website as well. When he applied for the HSSP, I remember not seeing anything for the ICS either.

Thanks so much!
