How long does it take for a drug waiver/results to go through for AFROTC

I am currently enrolled in my univeristys AFROTC, but i had mistakenly said i have tried marijuana "less than 10 times" on the form where it asks about drug usage. I am not a drug user at all and I honestly dont remember the last time or how many times I have done it.

When the sergeant asked me about it and asked for a specific number of times, I said I dont maybe 7, and wrote 7 on the form
so then I had to speak to the Lit. about the issue, and then she asked me again for a specific number and describe the experience, so i thought about it and finally said i have only tried it 3 times. The dates I put were 2010, 2013, and 2014.

She then said that I am able to continue on with the program, that she had to submit a waiver and wait until what they say. What do you think my chances are of staying in the AFROTC program? I'm concerned because I wasnt consistent with my answer, but I told both the sergeant and Lit. that I got confused with the number of times Ive tried it versus the "hits"/smoking.

The sergeant told me that it "was nice of the Lit." to be submitting me a waiver so I guess waivers just arent handed out? How long should I expect?

I'm worried I won't be able to continue with the program and will have to tell my mom the reason why.

The waiver can take a few days or maybe a month depending how many are in the queue before you that requires a waiver will be how long it takes for you to get the answer.

Just a guess, but I would think it shouldn't be long because the bulk of DoDMERB exams have not yet occurred for 2019, and those that occurred for 18 have been finished up by now.

Something to understand is nobody know what the number is that they deem experimental. The other thing is you have admitted to smoking within the last twelve months. The final question will be did you lie on the DoDMERB exam? That becomes a character review by the board which they can dis-enroll you for.

Assuming you continue on with the program, you need to make absolute sure you remember EXACTLY what you put on that original form. This is not the last time you will be asked how many times you've used drugs in the past. Every time you get investigated for a security clearance, or if you apply for certain positions, you will be asked that question and your answer will be checked for consistency. If there is any inconsistency, it will create problems for you down the road. My advice is to get a copy of whatever paperwork you signed stating that you've used drugs, specifically how many times and what dates...and keep a copy for your records.

Listen to nick. A TS clearance is only valid for five years. It is a very long and thorough process, (takes about 6 months, and if I recall it is @ 50 pages of questions) in which your references will be also asked about if they know of you smoking pot or any underage alcohol issues. Your references interviews take about 45 minutes.

So even if you tried to hide the fact now it probably would have come out later on and the risks would have been much higher at that time. I.E. no commissioning and if on scholarship they would have the right to collect every penny you received.

what is the DoDMERB exam? Since I admitted to it in the last 12 months maybe chances are much lower then? The sergeant said I should be fine but just to be consistent with my answer, and she also said the number limit of times is 5..

Your DoDMERB exam is just a doctors check up to look for certain things and check your medical history. You will fill out a form, and it does ask about drug use (provide approximate dates). Like your sergeant said its important you remain consistent from this point on. Your security clearance will dig into it as well.

By being consistent does that mean I would stick with the original "less than 10 times" or the final answer I told my Lieutenant, which was 3?

What is the TS clearance? So youre saying its better I said something now rather than hide it?

Three!

Figure out what the truth is, by what we have read it's three. Saying less than 10 won't work.

Ps. TS is top secret security clearance.

Thanks for all your replies! I'm just lost and concerned about this whole thing, would the TS clearance happen before or after the waiver goes through?

Also has anyone experienced anything similar to this?

Ary,

Since you have not had the exam, my assumption is you are a walk on.

As a sophomore you will compete for Summer Field Training(SFT). If not selected the chances are you will bed disenrolled. You will go for a DODMERB exam at this point as an SFT cadet. Your det.may call it EA (Enrollment Allocation). You MUST go to SFT to commission
~ Get your medical records in order now. It is an exam similar to a sports physical, but will include color vision and hearing.
~ The pot question will come up again.

TS= Top Security.

I do not know your career goals in the AF, but if you want to go rated, this will occur before the end of your junior year. Non-rated occurs your fall semester senior year.

If by walk on you mean, attending the NSO and then attending the first LLAB the following week, then yes. I'm a 250 and at the NSO was when I filled out the drug form. I wasnt going to say anything on the form because I have no records but i saw that the cadet next to me admitted to it too. And the sergeants drilled into my head that if I wasnt honest now it will come up later so I got scared.
I havent had any DoDMERB or any other exams..

By letting me continue on does that mean anything? Like if I was disqualified from the progam wouldnt they have kicked me out by now instead of letting me continue?

I am with Zero on this one..3 in AFROTC is usually the make or break point.

They are not going to kick you out until they get the answer from HQ AFROTC. You are not what is considered contracted.
~ Scholarship and 300/400 are contracted.

At this point you also need to be honest about your future.
~ What is you major?
~~ Tech or non-tech
~ Your CPA?
~ PFA
~ AFOQT?
~~ This exam is like an ACT. It is a 4 Part timed exam. GOOGLE AFOQT.

All of these factors will he a part of your score for selection.

The biggest part of the score will be your Commanders rank.
~ As a 250, I would ask for a sit down now. Ask if you are competitive with your stats for SFT, regardless of the pot issue.

It sounds like you are lucky you got scared and told the truth. If you don't tell the truth and remain consistent, your background check won't go well. They will dig into your past and find the truth regardless so keep your story straight. Take this as a lesson about telling the truth. You will probably be asked that same question multiple times till you commission, good luck.:thumb:
