How quickly will you find out if you got accepted for an NROTC scholarship?

I finished my application and got it in for the first board but I just want to know when I will find out if I got it or not. I know it is a rolling board, but if i got accepted in the first board will I be notified or will I have to wait until the boards end in April to find out?

You will find out fairly soon after the board meets and selects you. My DS submitted his application by the end of August and he found out early November via email that he received a scholarship. He received a letter via snail mail a few days later. He had a week or so to send in his acceptance; then he just had to wait to find out if he was accepted at the school where he received the scholarship. As you can see on my "signature" it all worked out!

There are a lot of great posts describing the process in more detail; if you search you should be able to find out more.

On the other hand, OP could end up waiting until APril to hear a positive or negative reply. It all depends on where you are with respect to the cusp of selection/no selection.

My DD had all her paperwork done last August for a nursing NROTC scholarship. She was notified for her acceptance this past April 29, a couple of days before the college commitment deadline. So the takeaway, hope for the best but be prepared for a potentially long haul.

The first place you will find out is the web portal.
The early boards select fewer candidates and you generally find out with in a week of the board closing.
There is a schedule of boards, but they do not always meet.
I don't believe the first board met, so I would expect the first group to hear the third week in September.

I am with kinnem, hope for an early response, but mentally prepare yourself for April. Somewhere there is a link that discusses that boards and the percentages that go out from the first few boards.

Honestly, if you follow this forum, you will realize that there are always a few posters that will check their portals daily and eventually they will post their results, which in turn will light up a thread like a Christmas tree.

Usually, at that time the inevitable question what does it mean that I have not been select ted at this time, does it mean I am out of the running?

The answer is NO! It means that at this point they want to see a larger pool before deciding. It is not uncommon for candidates to be reboarded a couple of times. Hence, like kinnem stated be prepared for an answer 6-9 months from now.

+1 to the above. DS had a completed package in Pensacola by Labor Day last year. He did not receive notice of a scholarship until March 28. It was a long wait but totally worth it in the end.

Good luck!

Always be working plans B, C, D and E while waiting to hear back from NROTC. DS got a negative reply in April a few years back, but because we had worked alternate plans he was still able to attend his #1 choice OOS college with other scholarships. He participated in NROTC there without the scholarship and eventually won an in-school (sideload) scholarship during his sophomore year.

At the end of this academic year he will commission as a 2LT in the USMC. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Clarification

I agree with the posts above. All I was trying to say in my original reply is that you will hear shortly after you are selected, if and when you are selected. It could be September, it could be April, or any month in between. If you are selected earlier, you won't have to wait until April for an answer.

Ditto...

My DS had his completed in time for the first board and did not hear until early / mid Jan.

I might be "seeing" things

My DS and I checked his NROTC scholarship account and it seemed to have changed since a day ago with a message "no decision has been made....". We're new to the process but this status was not on his dashboard for the two months we spent getting his application completed. Is it fair to say he was selected by the first board?? :-(

It's fair to say that "no decision has been made". Wish there was more to it than that but it sounds like there wasn't an August board again this year so I doubt his file has actually come up to the board yet.

Earliest you will hear anything is October (about 3 weeks after the board meets) as was stated above. Welcome to the NROTC website stalker club....we were all there last year!

good luck!

Sigh...I am now in the "Matrix"....

Thank you Navymomwannabe. I thought I read some older posts that indicated a "no decision" was in fact a "no award" and that he'd be re-considered during the next board review. In other words, he wasn't picked while others may have been selected. Sounds like that may not be the case and it's just a "null" in that nothing has happened. I feel like a sponge craving information that doesn't exist..ha ha ha..

Oh Sgt. Lee I feel your pain. I too was desperate for information and waiting 8 months was agonizing. The portal update and an email to your son will be the notifications when it happens.

The board does light up when people get word of scholarships and that's when the real stalking begins. Until then, keep busy and be supportive.

Hang in there!

Our local NROTC Scholarship applications coordinator indicated that there had already been a board in August and the next one will be 9/8/14.

That makes sense..

That would make more sense. Our account has remained the same for a couple of months and then two days ago the dashboard changed in format with a new message - "No decision has been made" which I have been told (in the past) that this is a board essentially not selecting you this round. Does that sound right?

That sounds like the experience of our DD last year. She was not selected during the first board, but was on the second board. The boards were delayed last year, though, compared to previous boards.
