this may be worth looking into when choosing schools but it didnt even occur to us for some reason to look into this. So we were pleasantly surprised (to the tune of $45,000) but DS' school throws in room and board if you get a ROTC scholarship. I was very confused when I got a bill for $0.00...but it was a lovely confusion.

We had that advantage with our daughter but we knew that going in. With our son, we're paying for him to live off campus.
 
There is a sticky at the top of the ROTC forum regarding benefits given to ROTC cadets.

Singapore posted an alphabetical list of each college that she knew of. Starting at Post 15.
I.E
Bucknell offers free R & B for ROTC
RIT offers free room and boards to all 3 and 4 year scholarship recipients
Tulane offers free room and board to all scholarship recipients.
University of Colorado Boulder get free room and board on scholarship.

I strongly suggest to look at that sticky and contact the college to see if they still have it in effect since that list is five years old.

You make a good point... while the information is certainly out there to be found, not everyone realizes that certain schools offer extra advantages (financial) to those on ROTC scholarship. Those financial incentives can range from smallish grants to "full ride" tack-on scholarships that cover the remainder of tuition as well as room and board.

Bottom Line: Students and Parents do your due diligence around school choice and ask directly what other financial incentives a student bringing an ROTC scholarship to that school can expect.

According to that sticky post, Penn State use to do the same for R&B back in the day ... but the days of focusing on the students vs football($$$) are long gone.

Ahhhh if only this was the case....... I would have saved $12,160 last year.

Unfortunately CU charges handsomely for the pleasure of having 2 19 year old guys live in a 110 sq. ft., garden level dorm room with exposed heating pipes, closets with no doors, no A/C and a shared bathroom with about 40 of your closest friends, not to mention the mediocre food. CU does offer R&B help for out of state cadets for the first year. In fairness they do offer some additional scholarships to some in state cadets. DS received a $5,000 Stars and Stripes scholarship last year to be used for whatever he chose.
 
Room and Board Match

Private Schools in particular offer the room and board match because ROTCs pay for the full price of tuition or the "sticker price" when most students pay a lower rate. That "delta" between the sticker price and the lower rate is what pays the room and board for cadets.

I'm sure that is often the case. But in some cases it can go beyond that...

DS was offered an AFROTC scholarship which quite clearly did not cover the full tuition to his SMC of choice. But even so the school had a special room and board scholarship available for anyone bringing any sort of ROTC scholarship... even partial ones such as AFROTC. In addition, the school offered "merit money" that, for all intents and purposes, closed the tuition gap to result in nearly a full ride. All in, the sticker price was around 50k annually and ROTC paid only a fraction of that... but the offer was still nearly zero net out of pocket.

Don't disagree with you. Just pointing out the economics of the room and board match and why many private schools provide it.

My experience is based on actually negotiating room and board match with a private school when I was a PMS. Army ROTC pays full tuition.

MedB - we're in the "thick" of the ROTC scholarship process, received a few letters of acceptance to SMC's already (sent them off to scholarship boards), and waiting to hear the first board review (and possibly many more thereafter). Is the SMC you are referring to Norwich? I believe they're the only private on and with sticker price around $50K. Thanks!

COL Kirkland - thank you for that. We completed both the AROTC and NROTC applications about 3 weeks ago. Between PFT's, interviews, letters of recommendation, getting my DS's HS to send out transcripts during the summer, etc. etc, it was quite an effort. Legitimate plug here....we did review your book for guidance and appreciate your insight very much.

We even have three acceptance letters from SMC's and sent those off to both "cadet command" groups as well. Both the Army and Navy representatives have been extremely responsive and my instinct tells me that will change as the influx of applications/questions increase now that many are applying. I hope our early entry, having very solid applications (we actually arranged for a PMS interview while visiting an SMC over the summer..thought that might help), and actually receiving/forwarding letters of acceptance would give my DS a slight "nudge" in the right direction. Now we wait :)...

Hi Sgt Lee,

Yes, Norwich... I believe Norwich still offers three "levels" of merit money depending on your cadet's total package. I want to say the top is the President's Scholarship or some such and tops out at nearly 20k annually I think; then they go down from there. And of course Norwich offers the ID White scholarship as well for those that bring and ROTC scholarship with them to Norwich.

Norwich is a great school and don't be put off by the sticker price.... depending on your particular cadet they can make the total package pretty attractive.
