I am currently station in Kunsan, South Korea. I just submitted my 1786 and i am PSCing back to the states on the 16th of September. I read something about having your orders put on hold once you submit your 1786 but MPF told me to continue to out process. I have been asking around and researching about the academy but nobody seems to know more than basic like its really hard to get in and the 1786 form. I have talked to my ALO but being station in Korea its really hard to communicate with anybody. I am currently stumped and any advice would be much appreciated.

First, thank you for your service. I'm a retired USAF officer who was also stationed at the "Kun." Officer in Charge of the 80th Fighter Squadron Aircraft Maintenance Unit. Now to the subject at hand. If I were you I'd recommend getting in front of the Military Personnel Flight Commander with your dilemma. Perhaps your squadron commander can be of assistance as well. You need to be in front of a decision maker. Don't forget chain of command though...let your supervisor/NCOIC/OIC kno wyou are taking this route. Best of luck.

"Juvat" (Gee...can't guess that squadron) said it beautifully! :thumb:

Chain of Command and a decision maker...in that order and in short order.

Best of luck!!!

This is OBE since he had a 16 September port call but I thought I would add my 2 cents. By way of background, I am a retired Chief and spent my 24 year career in Personnel almost exclusively in enlisted assignments with headquarters tours at AFPC and two MAJCOMs. I am also a 2016 parent.

The purpose of “having your orders put on hold” is to keep from spending PCS funds unnecessarily while a decision is rendered on the application. However, since this airman is a mandatory mover coming off a short tour in Korea, the DEROS trumps the assignment deferment. The AF can't leave him hanging in Korea while the academy considers his application.

Once he reports to his new base the MPF should enter the assignment availability code (AAC 05) to keep him from PCSing until he hears from AFA. The deferment will really be meaningless though since he will get a decision from them before he meets the minimum time on station to PCS again. If he is not selected, the AAC is removed and he is now eligible for an enlisted assignment in the normal rotation. If he is selected, the MPF will cut orders for him to proceed to AFA. Looks like the system worked like it was supposed to unless it changed since I retired many moons ago.

One other quick thought on this for any airmen currently stationed overseas who are submitting applications for 2019. If you don’t want to return to the CONUS while your application is being considered, voluntarily extend your DEROS to May or June 2015.
