Greetings everyone,

I am currently a Rook (freshman) at Norwich University. I am a member of the Army ROTC unit here and a Business Management/Accounting major. I am also a greenstick (newby) in the Mountain Cold Weather unit here which is unique as it is the only one in the country. If any of you have questions about rook life, campus, the corps, or anything about the nation's oldest private military college please don't hesitate to message me.

"I will try!"

I'll bite because Norwich was my number 2 choice behind USCGA and I most definitely would have gone if not accepted to USCGA. Plus, maybe it would help future applicants.

How do you feel about your Rook year so far at Norwich? Is it more difficult/less difficult than expected? I have a friend who is a junior in the Corps and I have heard rumors about "softening" of the Corps so I am curious to hear a freshman's perspective.

What made you decide on Norwich and did you considered any other military colleges or any SAs? If so, why choose Norwich over them?

I think the softening of the Corps is crucial. At Norwich and other SMCs there were always hazing problems through the years. There have been broad efforts to eliminate hazing through the past decades at the SMCs. I think it is great because you get the training as you rise through the Corps is to manage your objectives while employing propper techniques. Hazing is not tolerated in the military. These are important lessons in ROTC.

How many cadets are in the Mountain Cold Weather unit? Does a cadet have to tryout to become a "greenstick"? What is the emphasis of the group's training? Cold weather survival/rescue training or mountain warfare training, or a combination of all of that?

My rook year so far has been quite interesting, it has had its up's and down's but I enjoyed every single minute of my time here. My cadre tell me that every year the corps gets "softer" but thats expected because they want to make it seem that they had a harder rookdom. This year we did get alot of our privaledges somewhat earlier than past years but that is about it.

In total there are about 180 or so cadets in MCW with 140 of them being "greensticks". You basically show up on the set day to become a "greenstick" and your training starts from that day forth, the cumulative training leads up to patch night and CAP week where all of what you have learned is put to the test. During those two weeks is usually when the vast majority of the "greensticks" dropout. The emphasis of our training is a combination of everything but if I had to put them in order it would be Survival/rescue training, mountain warfare training, cold weather survival.

Just to echo Track's question - what made you decide on Norwich? Was it your first choice or? Are you involved in any team sports? Thx!

Norwich was second on my list after the service academies and I chose to come here because it was the oldest private military college/birthplace of ROTC and it had some very unique training opportunities. I am on the baseball team as well as being involved in a couple different clubs.
