Is it acceptable to submit an essay that is over the word count but NOT over the character count?

Curios. Why would the academy or any university set rules on their application if they didn't want you to follow them? Maybe there's a school out there that is looking for the rebel student who makes their own rules. I can assure you the military academies aren't that school.

CC was being kind...

I'll be the crusty old senior officer ALO...

NO.

Clarity, brevity, and skill...that's what they're looking for as well as "attention to detail." I would re-edit and ensure you're below the number.

"Whose Line" rules aren't in effect?

Essays should be long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to remain interesting.

I know three of the colleges flat out told my kids that every essay is placed through à word counter and a red line was drawn at that number. Nothing after it was read. Their explanation was they have thousands upon thousands of essays to read....politely said if you can't follow the rules as an applicant it makes us question if we want you!

And in addition to all the advice above, if your screen name resembles your real name, you may wish to reconsider using your real name in any public forum such as this one.

Thanks for the advice guys! I will be sure to edit the essay below the word count before I submit it.

Attention to detail? Are you telling me the military is looking for individuals who can follow orders and directions?

Sorry. Had to do it. Mike.

Mike and Steve, this sums up how we all feel about you guys, be it honesty or in this case ....humor
:worship:

Well, I thought all military paperwork, in an effort to reduce and reuse, could be shredded... after making four copies?

Meghan, good idea to change your screen name to something like:

"reluctant essayist."

Yes, find something a little less identifying.

As to the first, it was tongue-in-cheek.

I don't think that you can change your screen name. Your options maybe to just start a new account (easiest) or contact a system administrator to see if they can/will change it for you.
