Hello all,

My DS was awarded a four year AROTC scholarship a few days ago. We have not yet received the letter in the mail, but we are already beginning to plan our next step. According to my DS we have about a month to decide where he will use his scholarship towards. Out of the three schools he was awarded the scholarship to, we have already ruled one out. From the two left, for one of them we are very certain he will get in (we also spoke to the ROO and he assured us the same thing). The other school, however, is much more selective but is also a better school. What happens if my DS accept the scholarship to the more selective school and does not get in? Can he then use the scholarship to the other school that he will get into or will he lose his opportunity? We are very new to this process and could use all the information we can get! Thanks for your help and congratulations to all who were awarded the scholarship. To those still waiting, hang in there!

Letter reads you must reply no later than 12/5. You can fax, mail or scan/email your intent. Other information provided about medical, APFT, staying out of trouble, etc.

Envelope clearly indicates scholarship data enclosed.

Congratulations to your son. My son went through the transfer process last year. He received a 4 year scholarship from the first board in November and was ultimately rejected from the selective school he accepted the scholarship to. He had to wait until the end of April to find out that the scholarship transfer request was accepted.
When you get the letter in the mail, it will include about three pages of information including how to request a transfer.
Obviously, accepting the scholarship to a selective school prior to having an acceptance can be a gamble.

I forgot to add the paperwork states transfers will be considered on a case by case basis.
To transfer you need;
1. a statement as to why
2. a copy of rejection letter from college scholarship awarded to
3. a copy of acceptance letter from college you want it transferred to

So with this in mind, was there a large chance, at the time, that your son was not going to be able to transfer (thus losing the opportunity to use his ROTC scholarship)?

We had no idea what his chances would be. Of course once he received the rejection letter, he had no other choice but to request a transfer! :smile:

Would you mind sharing what that selective school was here, or in a private message?

Congrats to you and your son. I am going through the same thing with my son. His scholarship is to a very selective school. We think he has a decent shot of gaining acceptance, but it is not a guarantee, and we won't know until January. Does anyone know, if you request a transfer, does it have to be a school that was either (1) to a school where you were also awarded a scholarship to, or (2) to a school that was on your list of schools in your scholarship application? Can you request a transfer to a school that was not on your list of schools in your application? I read the paperwork and it doesn't seem to provide an answer. If anyone has any info I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks so much!

One thing I have learned on this forum is that no one knows what Cadet Command may or may not do. FWIW, my son was allowed to transfer his scholarship to a school that was not on his list of schools.

school doesn't need to be on his list, but he'll have to send in an acceptance letter to that school (obviously).
