Greetings to the military community,
I am a High School Senior applying for admission to the Virginia Military Institute this year. However, I have been homeschooled all my life, so that means that I am coming from a somewhat different perspective, with different opportunities and experiences. What follows is a brief summation of the various parts of my resume; I would greatly appreciate it if all of you VMI alumni and other knowledgeable individuals could comment, based on your experience, on my chances for admission.
G.P.A: 4.0
I have taken a wide variety of online and co-op classes in addition to studying at home, so that figure is not based wholly off of my parent’s grading. Additionally, my father is a Colonel in the Air Force and my mother is a qualified math teacher, so you can rest assured that their grading is professional.
AP Classes: U.S. History, English Language and Comp., Microeconomics, Macroeconomics.
Honors Classes: Algebra II, Chemistry, Biology.
ACT
English: 35
Math: 26
Science: 28
Reading: 35
Letters of Recommendation: Sterling. I have 1 from a PhD., 1 from a math and science teacher, 1 from two summer camp councilors, and 1 from a successful factory manager. I have had the opportunity to live and work with each of them in a close environment for periods ranging from 2-4 weeks, and all except the camp counselors have known me throughout High School.
Leadership
2 Summer Camp leadership awards.
Coached the novice debate teams in my debate club for a year.
Elected and served as party chairman in a mock government simulation lasting one week.
Elected and served as President of the United States in a crises-management simulation lasting one week.
Extracurricular Activities
-1 Year of football (freshman-level).
-1 Year of Gardening Club. Won Grand Youth Prize in a Flower Arrangement Competition. (Yes, my mother made me do it. But at least I did well, right? RIGHT?).
-2 Years of Team Policy debate. Advanced to the Regional Championship both years. South Carolina State Finalist. Multiple-time top-ten speaker placement. Third place at a debate tournament hosted by Patrick Henry College.
-Qualified Member of the National Piano Guild.
-Orange Belt in Taekwondo.
-I have volunteered for over 8 months with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, putting in over 200 hours of volunteer service. I am an officially qualified Crewmember, and have received the Specialty Training Ribbon and Operations Program Ribbon.
-Keelboat and Coastal Cruising Qualifications from the American Sailing Association.
-Military land-navigation qualified.
-Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED qualification from the American Red Cross.
-Basic Rappelling Certification.
So there you have it, for better or for worse. I am eager to apply myself wholeheartedly as a lowly Rat, “the dumbest and lowliest of all God’s creatures”, and earn my own small piece of the VMI legacy. Please comment on my chances for admission, suggest anything I can do to increase those chances, and give me any other advice that comes to mind. I will be extremely grateful for any and all help.
