I am preparing to leave the Navy and go to grad school. For service academy graduates, regarding Post 9/11 GI Bill Eligibility, which says for 100% you must do 36 months active duty after the academy payback time, does the time spent in flight school count towards the 5 year payback to the Academy?

i.e. Does the time for payback start as soon as you graduate the academy or does it start after you complete flt school (like the payback time for pilots/NFOs, which starts when you get your wings)?

You are AD as a student at UPT, the only difference is IF you wing you will owed more years. The commitment runs concurrent with your SA/ROTC scholarship. Leave UPT and you still owe the 4 (ROTC) or 5 (SA)

I am not getting how you can walk away with only 3 years as an SA grad, unless you were medically released.

To be brutally honest, you should be going through a separation process, at least the AF does this, they will be a much better insight than an anonymous forum like this. The reason why is they have your records and again, at least for the AF, they will require you to attend seminars known as the TAP. Transition Assistance Program

OBTW, you might want to pm LITS. I think he may help you a lot since he is the only poster here that I know of that dived at 5.

I think you may have confused the years the OP mentioned in his post. He said an "Additional" 3 years after the service obligation for the SA. I do not believe he is saying he is leaving the Navy after only 3 years total.

Not sure how it works in the AF but with my son in the Army, he had a 6 year obligation after flight school. He became active status on May 25th 2012, he will have fulfilled his obligation to ROTC on May 25th 2016, his obligation for flight school will be after that. His time at flight school counted towards his ROTC obligation.

I didn't complete flight training. Did 2 years, then attrited, and lateral transferred to another community where I am finishing up my 5th year.in the new community. So I'll be getting out at 7 years, with 2 being flight training and 5 in another community. I am wondering if the academy "payback" started as soon as I commissioned or when I lateral transferred, because the Navy (Milpersman) says when you attrite, you still owe 5 years in addition to the time spent training. I'm just wondering if the GI Bill works the same way or if it is simply 5 years from the time you graduate, no matter what job you do after graduation.

That's correct, though I would only have 2 years.

- This is exactly what I am referring to, the only difference being that the SA is 5 years.

If you have only served for 7 years I'm not sure your going to qualify for the full GI Bill. From what I have read those that complete 36 months beyond the obligated TIS for either ROTC Scholarships or the SA qualify for 80% of the GI Bill, sounds like you will only have 24 months beyond your obligation.

Your time at flight school should count toward your SA time. If you get out at 7 years you should get 80% (24 months of "eligible" time).

I have read that and the entire Benefits website. I received my certificate of eligibility yesterday, I just want to make sure I don't get something I don't deserve. I wouldn't be worried except the lady at the VA I talked to had no clue what I was talking about, and I couldn't find explicit verbiage anywhere.

Thanks for the help everyone.

My mistake, confused my numbers, 24 months gets you 80%, thanks for catching the mistake.

I don't think I'll be much help. When I got my certificate of eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Coast Guard Academy was an exception (really, it was in a loophole). That situation changed a year later, so I don't really know how it works anymore. There also use to be a requirement for tuition to be equal or less than the public university of the state your school was in... as in the GI Bill would cover up to that amount. For me, at GW, that would have been rough, as the University of DC is pretty cheap.... but that also changed.

It made more sense to use the GI Bill after I had separated because 100% of tuition was covered AND I received E-5 BAH for the DC area. I didn't get the BAH while I was in.
