If anyone wants to share, just wondering how some of the recent MOC interviews went and how long they lasted.

In AZ on the boards I have served...the longest was about 40 minutes (kid was just absolutely amazing and we were mesmerized) and the shortest was about 15 minutes. Plan on 20-30 minutes "typically" from my experience.

Which means I'm only 2% accurate as there are 49 other states!

Our son has his in CA today and it was about 25 minutes. His was the last one of the day and he felt it went well.

In VA (Sen Warner) the candidates interviewed for 15 minutes each with 3 different committee members. Most of the questions were expected - what does honor mean to you, what will you do if you don't get into an academy, talk about a time you failed. They interviewed over 60 candidates across 3 days. Sen. Kaine has not indicated he will interview this year. And the committee said that in VA they will not give double nominations this year. Decisions before Christmas.

Hope this helps future applicants.

As I recall Twin A's interview lasted about a half hour and many of his questions were of a hypothetical nature ("What would you do if...").

I have no memory of Twin B's interview - sorry! senior moment. But assume about the same.

I do know that there were some kids in there that day whose interviews lasted less than 15 minutes and usually, they were the kids who seemed (from observation and maternal intuition) "longshots." So, they weren't professionally dressed (not even a tie with khakis), just didn't seem as "psyched" - though this is just an observation from someone waiting in the waiting-room with a bunch of other parents. I have no idea what their eventual disposition was.

Son's interviews with Ga. Senators were 15 minutes each. He said it was a casual two way conversation with the three person panel. Typical questions about why Navy and where you saw yourself ten years down the road.

He's still waiting on nominations; hopefully by end of Nov. but could go through Dec into Jan.

Good luck to all,

What district of California do you reside?

Both DS and DD would have killed us if we went in with them. So on the one interview we actually drove them to (in the city) we were reduced to sizing up the other applicants from the street outside. :shake:

OP, average was about 25 mins or so. And yes, longer than the person in front of you is probably a good sign. :)

I think all the interviewees, or almost all of them, had a parent with them that day. It had snowed, a lot, and some of the kids lived an hour + away w/o bus or other public transportation.

I guess we could have waited in a coffee shop but in the letter they'd received, it actually said, "There is a waiting room with coffee." It was filled that morning.

My son's said his interview went about 20 mins and he also said it seemed as
though that was by design. So now he waits (as do his parents!)

Hi Navymom19, My daughter received an email from our Senator stating:

"Due to the large volume of applications my office received, we are unable to reschedule interviews. Interviews will be kept to 15 minutes in length."

Actually, the first Senator's interview was the same thing. They had a few interviews going on at the same time with 3 interviewers per candidate. It looks like it depends on the state and the amount of applicants.

Last weekend took about fifteen minutes for three going up at a time with three different panels in three rooms. Seems to be about the same time for Senate and Congress here in Connecticut. Have done it before and the time seems the same. Senator Office has many more applicants and I understand that SAT's were also scheduled during interview weekend so that may have messed up the schedule?

Our son's interview was about 15-20 minutes in length and they kept things moving along quite nicely. He went in on his own while I waited outside at a nearby restaurant. He was well prepared having done NROTC officer interview and re-contacting that officer to ask some questions of him. The officer was very helpful. Our son reached out to his BGO as well. He felt good coming out of it and we told hime no matter what the outcome, the fact that he was where he is in the process is a testament to his hard work and strong character and that we are enormously proud of him. Soooooo, now we wait.

One of my senators interviews was actually timed for two minutes, the other was timed for 15 minutes, and my congressman's interview I've been told is around 15 minutes.

MJP...first of all...congratulations to your DS for securing an interview that
in itself is something to be proud of. Second, the old saying...good things
come to those who wait...and wait...and wait..lol! just go about your daily
routines and keep good thoughts. My DS had his MOC interview on Nov 6th
and two days ago he got a letter from the MOC congratulating him on being
selected for a nomination to the USNA and then just yesterday he got an
email congratulating him for being selected to be interviewed by our state
Senator for a nomination. Even with this said, we must keep our heads about us and he is
keeping his focus on his current HS studies. Being patient is not a strong
attribute of mine so I am learning quite the lesson here. Good luck.

Thank you for your kind words.I hope you and your son get the news you want to hear...and that BFE!
I know it is hard to wait and it is tough on our son. Haven't heard from our senators yet.

He's already been accepted to one of his plan B schools(took them all of 6 days to let him know from app to admit) so he knows he has a place to go.

Still waiting on NROTC as well...ugh

We'll be here so as soon as you know something, please post!

Fingers crossed for everyone

In OH, the senators and MOC stated that interviews would be limited to 15 minutes. As we waited during the interviews, we noted that the time limit was adhered to. However, our son's interviews, for all 3, ended up being 25-30 minutes. One senator's aide told us that they were interviewing 237 candidates. He received a nomination to the USMA from Senator Portman, by letter last week. Oh senators coordinate, so we won't receive a nomination from Senator Brown. Our MOC only held his interviews in Dec, so we are expecting to hear from him any day.
