Hurt while on ROTC scholarship?

Hi there,

I was wondering what would happen if you get hurt while on an ROTC scholarship? Lets say you are in your third year at an university (on a 4-year ROTC scholarship), and you get hurt and you cannot continue with the ROTC program. Since you are not able to complete the ROTC program, do you have to pay back the tuition for the previous years or what happens?

Thanks for your help.

search this forum - but in most cases if the injury ends the cadets participation the tuition/book money/stipend is NOT required to be repaid.

Hopefully you will have Clarkson along in the morning(eastern time) or perhaps PM him.

Good luck and hope your cadet is okay.

One thing to remember, once you are contracted it is not an instant disenrollment if you get hurt. Several cadets I know have had injuries that they were allowed to heal. A classmate of my older son severely broke his ankle, had to have surgery and had pins put in.He was on profile and crutches for a good part of the semester. This cadet graduated and completed flight school.

They don't just kick you out if you get hurt, they will work with you. Being contracted helps a lot in these matters.

What kind of hurt? Hurt as in needs surgery and/or time to heal, but still physically healthy? Or hurt as in most likely not fit for service anymore? I don't want to pry into personal info and am not asking for injury specifics, just trying to get an idea of just how hurt because it affects whether or not one can continue in ROTC. What branch of ROTC? Was the injury a result of an ROTC activity or did it occur during ROTC training?

I've been through the hurt stage and medical review process a few times (including surgery), and though each case is handled on a case-by-case basis, I may be able to give some info.

I can answer this one with recent experience -

DS sustained significant injury during first semester FTX of MS111 year (last year). He tore his ACL graft repair from a high school football injury.

As it happened during an Army training event, absolutely everything was taken care of - not initially easily, mind you, but it was, and truly, with effort and kindness, we did get wonderful cooperation and results - and he had no negative impact to his scholarship, in fact, we are sitting here waiting to see branching results (hopefully today!).

That being said, he did have a very uneventful Junior (MS111) year participation in ROTC, and that did not help his scores much, but he attended everything and was finally released by the surgeon (major re-graft surgery, and rehab) five days before the 12th regiment assignment to attend LDAC, and did well. So, he stayed in the program, and the we had no issue of paying back tuition, nor paying for the surgery or rehab...

What you did not mention is if the injury was sustain while doing anything related to the ROTC program? Or did it just happen? That, I cannot answer to, but I would imagine that the military would consider your cadet an investment and want to work with you to keep your cadet, if possible, in the program.

Hope that helps, and certainly hope your cadet is okay! And I will echo Ohio, and mention that Clarkson definitely can answer this with authority. Good luck!

I will be following this thread closely, unfortunately. Son (Contracted MSI) just went to the ortho yesterday. After a 19 mile ruck for a Ranger Challenge FTX, his leg/knee started hurting. We're awaiting the results of his MRI. Doc thinks it is a badly strained quad, but insisted on the MRI to rule out a meniscus tear.

I'm especially concerned because the record PFT is Monday. It's doubtful son will be able to take that. Although he's already passed (270+) the prior three PFTs, what will not taking the record PFT mean?

My daughter an MS1 went through the same thing, she injured her knee during her first FTX. They used the previous APFT from week 0 that she passed, the Battalion was very supportive. The biggest obstacle we had was dealing with the Federal Workman's Comp, after a month of waiting for approvals for her MRI, we ended up paying for it with cash. Our family insurance wouldn't touch it because it was Workman's Comp, we are hoping for a reimbursement. The delay was starting to affect her training and PR pledging because they sidelined for medical reasons. Fortunately the MRI was good and now she has to get her run times back since she had to be on crutches for a month.

Is it considered a Workmen's Comp. issue if a student gets injured during a battalion event?

That is how they treated her injury, they took her to the hospital during the FTX.

Here is the outcome for my daughter's knee injury during an FTX. Since this is classified as a Federal Workman's comp case my insurance won't pay for anything and the workman's comp has barely paid either. My DD was getting payment notices that added up to $1500 and threats of bill collectors, in fear of messing up her credit rating, we ended up paying for it ourselves and trying to get reimbursed for it. So far they will pay only $60 for the $300 bill for an MRI, this is absurd, this all started back in October. Her knee is all healed and has been released from limited PT.
