DQ for Orthodontics?

My DS checked the DODMETS website tonight and it showed a DQ for Orthodontics D004.00. What is strange is we sent in the Orthodontics Questionnaire and his orthodontist put that his braces would be off on June 1st. He also signed the section that notes all orthodontic appliances need to be removed prior to I-Day for USNA and prior to being commissioned for NROTC. So we're wondering why he would be DQ'? I read some old posts that everyone is DQ'd until the braces come off, but then why require the Ortho Questionnaire? Any one else experience this?

I suppose the questionnaire is simply to discern if the Ortho is the usual, routine thing, or something more, such as attempting to correct TMJ issues.
In any event, I think a little time on the DODMERB website, or a call to them can provide assurance that this is routinely a temporary DQ.

I would call them and make sure they are in rcpt of the ortho questionnaire. It might be that it hasn't been updated in their system yet. My DD took the form (filled out and signed) with her to her actual exam. We down loaded it from DODMERB website ahead of time. It was sent in with her exam paperwork. Hers are due to come off in February, and she is DODMERB qualified. My older daughter, currently a mid at USNA, was in same situation. So I know they don't keep them as DQ until braces come off.

I would do just as suggested. Make sure they have all the information. You may still need to go through the waiver process to prove that this is routine and that it will be completed before entrance. My son's braces were off but he still wears a retainer ---NO WAIVER required.

I have not been able to find the orthodontic questionnaire. My DD would like to take it already signed to the exam. Would you be able to point me in the right direction to find it?

My son is in the same spot. We sent the ortho form in with initial physical. Received DQ on DODMERB site and in mail. Orthodontist faxed the form to DODMERB a few days later. We are now waiting. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Figured It Out

Okay so I called DoDMERB and actually spoke to a very pleasant lady who informed me that despite I-Day being 1 July, orthodontic treatment needed to be completed by 15 April for USNA. This made sense since at CVW they told us 98% of LOA's are out by that date. Trip back to the orthodontist with new ortho questionnaire and updated date of removal of the braces for DS. Then I made another phone call just as I was going to snail mail the questionnaire. Spoke to another wonderful person at DoDMERB who said I could also email the questionnaire. Scanned, emailed, received an acknowledgement email and voila...2 days later DS is medically qualified. Kudos to the personnel at DoDMERB!

Shoeless,

Have your DS email the orthodontic questionnaire to DoDMERB at usaf.dodmerb.helpdesk@mail.mil

In the subject line include his name and last 4 of SSN. He should receive an acknowledgement email within 24 hours. Quickest way to get it into his file.

Great information. Thank you!

YIKES!

DS just submitted his remedial Orthodontic Questionnaire (mailed yesterday). Doctor indicated on the form that DS will have his braces off in "April or May." My understanding from the doc is that DS will probably have them off sooner, but he wanted to write in the worst case scenario (We did not know about the April 15th date noted above by MDHNS).

If April 15th is the deadline, what will DODMERB do? Will he be DQ'd by USNA? Can the DDS resubmit the form with an earlier date?

Any advice is appreciated!

Yes just resubmit and have DDS put in hard date of 15 April. Hopefully your DS' teeth will be A OK by that date. Good luck!

Good News!

Checked the site this morning and Medical Status now says:
"Qualified"

DS didn't have to re-submit the Orthodontic questionnaire after all.

Whoo hoo!
