Hi everyone,

Anxious class of '19 hopeful here... Nobody told me that the single hardest part of the application is the wait!:frown:

I have one question about nominations. In my congresswoman's brochure for service academies, she lists the candidates from her district currently attending the Naval Academy. However, she had 4 names listed under class of 2018, as well as others from '17, '16, etc.

How is this possible? I was always under the impression that each MOC can only have 5 mids at any given time. I would really appreciate some insight here.

Thank you for your time,
Evan

Lists

Sometimes you will find MOC's will list individuals from their district attending the Academies that are not one of the five. While they may all be from their district not all where "charged" to their "account". Remember, they will nominate 10 per slot available. One will get the spot, the others go into the National Pool and get selected and charged to SECNAV. Without their NOM that could not happen. Some in the district/state may get appointed via PRES NOM and they will list them too.

Our MOC currently has 11 mids at USNA. How many were charged to his account I do not know. So that magic "5" has some flexibility.

Thanks for your answers! Craig, do you know how many candidates typically make it into the national pool and how many get SECNAV nominations?

I know exactly how many were charged to his account. Five or less. Period. There is no flexibility to the five. Additional people from the district can be admitted from the national pool and are NOT charged to the MOC.

How many

All 9 from each slate not charged to the MOC goes into the pool. I will defer to others to provide an answer to your SECNAV question.

MOCs can only have 5 mids at USNA at any given time. However, others from their district may get appointments via other sources. These include those with Presidential noms, those coming from NAPS/Foundation who didn't secure MOC noms, and those from the national pool who may have received a nom from the MOC but ultimately were slotted to SecNav for the appointment.

There is really no way to figure out who is slotted to which source -- often mids themselves don't know to whom they are "slotted." It's an administrative issue for the Academy.

If an MOC nominates 10 candidates for a vacancy and has one slot open, the other 9 (assuming qualified) go to the national pool. Some, all, or none might ultimately receive an appointment out of the national pool.

Thank you so much for all of your answers. This was really helpful.
