NROTC (Marine Option) Questions

My DS applied for an NROTC (Marine Option) scholarship and was considered in the November Board. The portal states that his application remains at the Marine Corps District for Board selection. I was curious if anyone knew how long the process takes or when we might find out the results.

Also, I have been trying to get information on the number of NROTC (MO) scholarships that are awarded each year versus the number of applications submitted. Does anyone have stats on this?

Thanks and good luck to everyone else who is waiting to hear!

I think one thing that I've gleaned over the past year by various posts is that the NROTC portal is always the "last to know" on scholarship selection status for Marine Option. For the early board in November, candidates are notified starting mid-December ish. Those that don't make the cut in the early board get rolled over into the regular board in February.

Haven't seen any stats. Stats will only make you crazy anyway. :)

It usually takes a few weeks for the results of the board will be known. You may only hear in the case of an acceptance otherwise your DS will be reboarded in the spring (there are only 2 Marine Option Boards).

You may not hear a positive or negative reply until late March or early April. My DS did not receive a negative reply until the first week of April. Because we had worked hard at plans B, C, and D we were ready to execute on plan B which still put him at his first choice OOS college.... so keep working those backup plans.

I have not seen any of the stats you're looking for, but when I do see stats they come from dunninla who I haven't seen on the boards in a while.

Mainly echoing the above posts here, but...last year the portal never updated for us. We first started seeing "I got selected" posts here around the 24th of Dec. My DS got a call from his oficer recruiter right after the New Year telling him he'd not been selected but his package was rolling over to the late board. Got a call again in the spring (April?) telling him "not this year".

Like Kinney, we executed plan b and he is enrolled as a College Programmer and in the running again for a scholarship. Fingers crossed.

As to stats, they vary widely year to year and even board to board. It's more calculus than arithmetic. Scholarships offered depend on projected needs of the future active duty force, so they change from year to year.

Good luck! It's important to stay motivated and focused on the goal....there are multiple opportunities to earn a scholarship and many ways to earn a commission, even without a scholarship.

Confirming the other posts... The November board notifications come out right around Christmas. 4 years ago, I think my DS heard on the 24th via the Portal. A hard copy letter showed up 10 days (or so) later.

The February board notifications generally come out in April with notifications going right up until May 1.

I have never seen stats like applicants vs scholarships awarded. I am sure they are out there but I don't have a source. I did see once source state an overall selection rate for NROTC of approx. 20% but that can vary widely I am sure.

Here is a SWAG so widely off it would probably be laughable to anyone that knows the real numbers... One way of working the math is that by the summer after junior year, all Marine Option ROTC midshipmen have to attend OCS in Quantico. There are two sessions with approximately 150 per session. So by Junior year, there are approximately 300 guys going the ROTC scholarship route. They have to assume some attrition from freshman year till then, so perhaps 350 scholarships are awarded every year?

Here are the actual stats from the second increment of OCS this summer:

130 PLC-Senior candidates arrived at OCS, 126 began training with Company L of that 118 (93.65%) are scheduled to graduate this cycle; compared to 121 of 145 (83.4%) that graduated from Company E in 2d Increment Summer 2013.

147 NROTC candidates arrived at OCS, 138 began training with Company L of that 108 (78.26%) are scheduled to graduate this cycle; compared to 131 of 170 (77.1%) that graduated from Company G in 2d Increment Summer 2013.

So, just a question from someone that knows nothing about NROTC Marine Corps Option.

When do they go to OCS?
The 9 that did not start OCS, was this due to medical or something else?
What happens to the 30 that did not graduate?

Thanks, Inquiring minds want to know.

Jcleppe:

ROTC candidates go to Officer Candidate School after Junior year.
PLC candidates may go twice or once (depending upon when they enter the program) but after Junior year would be the first (or final) time period they would go.

There is an introductory physical and PFT. This washes out a few believe it or not. Probably some admin quirks also.

30 drop out and don't graduate after starting the program for injury, DOR (Drop on Request), academics or honors violations. Some are recycled the next session or next year. Others are cut from the program. Here are the actual stats from this summer's second session (sorry but can't get formatting to work):

DOR NPQ Performance Integrity Total
PLC-SRS 0 2 6 1 8
NROTC 2 3 21 4 30
