number of people nominated and qualified?

When a candidate is one of the 10 nominees in a congressman or senators pool does this make them "nominated" it says there is around 4300 candidates nominated a year, but I would think the number would be larger for so many nomination sources. So if you are part of the 10 in a pool of people, are you nominated or do you have to receive a principle nomination ?
 
If you are on the slate of 10, then you have received a nomination.
Not an appointment.
The #1 on the slate, if fully qualified, will receive an appointment. The other 9 will go on the NWL.
However, if you have a LOA, all you need is a nomination to be receive an appointment. You do not have to be the #1 on the slate.
 
Currently on the USMA website (not sure if this has been updated for class of 2018 or is for class of 2017):

Nominated - 4,120
Qualified (academic & physical) - 2,360
Admitted - 1,257

As you can see there are far more candidates nominated than those qualified and finally admitted. Some that receive appointments will decline to attend another SA or another college. And some may not be medically qualified.

There are many candidates that will be QNS (qualified not selected) and receive the TWE. Sometimes it just comes down to the numbers.
 
And to make Buff's answer clear: You would be one of the 4300 who received a nomination.

As for why the number is not higher (535*10 = 5350 plus VP plus Presidential): not every MOC submits a slate of 10. Also some (many) candidates receive multiple nominations.

Nope, that's not what Craig is saying...Mathematically, once every four years a MOC should have the ability to use a second nomination; hence the 1.25 since they don't all happen the same year but across a broad population (n=536) it should average out to 1/4 each year. Each district will vary by competition, retention of their appointees, and any hold backs/late graduates (there are August and December grads) and legally, the academies only are mandated to accept 4 of those appointees to get technical. My guess is that the actual math would bear out closer to 1.00 than 1.25 especially when you factor in a capped class/corps size, other nomination sources, NWL (Qualified Aleternates), prepsters, and direct admits for class competition goals (Additional Appointees).

I was averaging. It is going to be higher some years because of drop outs. A MOC could have 2 slots for two years in a row depending on how they use them. Five attending is always the limiting factor.

This year, our Senator and Congressman each had two slots to USAFA. So if you like air conditioned tents, its a good year :smile:

Stats for sex and ethnicity will vary from year to year based on guidelines, goals and applicants (quantity and quality).
