Early Action - Are they all LOAs or some MOC

So my DS got notified he is being deferred to the Regular Selection period in March and "not to worry, about 50% of the appointments are from the Regular Selection period." So what does that mean? How many of the "early action" selections given LOAs and just need a nomination and how many are simply appointments that are applied to Presidential or other nomination sources?

Doing the math with 535ish nominations from MOC each year that is half anyway. I have heard that if you have at least one nomination from a MOC you have about a 50/50 shot based on others in the MOCs slate not being 3Q for some other reason or choosing some other option for school. Just want to be able to reassure my DS (and his Mom) all is not lost.

MD, All is not lost. Remember slates are up to 10 people per opening that MOC can fill. They can name a principal nom and if qualified that person gets the nod. The other 9 then compete as part of that national pool we are al thrown into. Unless you know what type of nomination you get, you really can't be sure. Other candidates with Pres, VP, Sup, etc nominations don't always need an LOA to get in. A qualified candidate with a Pres nom, gets in. Up to 100 of them I believe.

Our DS rec'd the same letter today and he sent it to me via email. My response back to him was "well, you now know that you are one of the 2700(maybe more) or so that are part of the qualified candidate pool and were'nt rejected". I'm proud of him for the fact that he got himself "qualified for USAFA"...if nothing else.

Approximately 50% of appointments are awarded during the March/April timeframe but so are a lot of them between now and then. Remember, EA is really the AFA's way of saying to the cream of the crop with lots of college options to "look at us" b/c "we'll admit you early" or at least give an LOA. They know they are competing against the other top schools for that candidate pool.

Any candidate with an LOA that remains eligible AND gets a nomination, gets an appointment. LOA's are not all that common so I don't think that there are several hundreds of them out there. Our DS did not get an LOA and is hoping for an MOC nom. If he gets a nom, he's got a 50/50 shot at getting in.

Not going to dwell on it. Nom interview is done, College apps are in, ROTC package done....just gotta wait it out and see where he ends up. He's said he'll serve either way so if serving is the goal, there are lots of paths to commissioning as an Air Force Officer.

Best of luck to your DS and as everyone will always tell you on these boards, have your plan B and C and D ready to go if AFA does not come through.

How did your DS(s) recieve the deferral news?
Was it email, snail mail or on their portal?
Just curious because by DD has not received any news yet from USAFA and had her application completed for EA.
She does have an MOC nomination and has already gotten news from USNA and USCGA.

I am qualified for EA too and haven't heard anything yet. Wondering if that is good, bad, or neutral.

oops - Appointments to both USNA and USCGA
don't want to spoil anything but the BFE's were very impressive !!!!

USAFA sent an email saying there was a message on the portal. DS has Senator and Congressional Nominations to USAFA, Congressional to USNA, and Presidential to both. We were hoping for good news but I guess we wait. My DD is Class of 16 at USNA and had better GPA and ACT and still didn't get an LOA, EA or anything. Just got the BFE in March of her senior year. Waiting sucks.

hopefulmom19, also sent you a PM

We received the same notification. He received an email regarding his Early Action status...and sadly it was saying that he was deferred to regular selection. He has the presidential nomination and received the representative's nomination (however it has been a few weeks and hasn't shown up on the portal). He was disappointed, but we are still hopeful and working on plan B, C, D, etc. Good luck to all, this is quite a roller coaster!

my son was notified via email that his 'online application had been updated!' (with the exclamation point). Of course, he got his hopes up, logged in and was notified he had been deferred. Talk about being deflated! I can't imagine how kids who received the same email felt if they had been rejected.

Tacky!! :thumbdown::hammer::
This is a very tough time on all involved and because of this post I believe you should be Banned for being pompous banned1:
This should not be on this page!

Ugh, that sounds rough! I am sorry. I know every time I see something from USAFA in my inbox my stomach flips over...it could either be very good or very bad. Is it just me, or is this the longest year of everyone else's life too?

I'm sorry but I completely disagree with your sentiments. This poster did not post anything bad and certainly should NOT be banned.

Your attack on them is completely unwarranted IMHO.

I don't think that celebrating your child's accomplishments is being tacky, and certainly no one is going to get banned for doing so.

I guess I am not understanding your anger. We are all here to celebrate and to worry together.

Not tacky at all. She posted this in response to a question I had asked her about her "news." Right after I posted the question I deleted my post because I had found my answer in one of her previous posts in another thread. She obviously answered my question just before I deleted my post. That being said, even if this wasn't the case, I still do not see this as tacky. Look around a bit...lots and lots of posts here regarding appointments, nominations, gpa's, etc, etc. News, any news is what is sought. Many here are hungry for information in a process that is a giant roller coaster, will lots of hills...ups and downs. I highly doubt any of the mods will consider this "tacky" and further doubt it will be removed. So, relax, this is a long tough process. Oh, and good luck.

I think you may be overreacting a bit. I see nothing wrong with the post.

Soooo back on topic......

I would still love to hear from folks who did get selected for EA if they are getting Appointments or an LOA and if so what the nomination source is for the appointment. Just trying to gauge if my DS will be likely competing in his MOCs slate for the appointment or if many of the EA appointments are using other than MOC nominations.

The 2019 Appointment thread keeps a running total of those who have been offered and appointment and their nomination source. To hear this early, all must have had packages eligible for EA.

Lots of early ones were Presidential and now more are seeing MOCs as their nominating source.

Here is the thing that needs to be understood....appointment and charging.

LOAs are not necessarily charged to the MOC. All they need is a nom., thus an LOA can say on a thread Presidential or MOC, but in reality they don't know if that is how they are being charged.
~ It is an appointment.

NO MOC, unless principal method can be charged until every member on the slate has been boarded and received a WCS.

Why is that tidbit important?

It is important because candidate Smith may be on the MOC slate, but didn't complete their package before Nov 1st., they have until February to submit their packet.
~ No principal means the MOC cannot be charged until Candidate Smith has a WCS.
~~ They can appoint because once you have a nomination there are about 500+ that come off the national list. They can say from historical data they are going to get appointed even if they don't win the MOC slate.

Secondly, an LOA is a moot subject impo.
A. USAFA is the stingiest impo of all of the SAs. My bet is maybe 200 get an LOA... at tops! Years back when 1600 were appointed, I recall the number being @300.
B. LOA for an MOC can amount to a freebie/boasting point. They can give a principal and 9 LOAs...all of them on their slate will be appointed. Yet, only the principal will be charged.
~ Yes, I know that is not realistic, but it drives the point home....appointment and charging g are not the same.

Honestly, you will go ape sheatt if you watch the appointment list or even assume that because they did EA they will know.before March.

Do yourself a favor....forget that date, expect Mass Mailing March.

Worry more about plan B AFROTC scholarship.

+1 Pima....NOMs took me a long time to get. The goal is to get one....not to worry about who your appointment is assigned to. And the next goal is to find a new hobby....so you aren't stalking the mailbox in December.

Good luck one and all!

Thanks for the clarification Juvat - I knew I was answering a question but then couldn't find the posting of the question.

I'm sure sorry if "parent" thought the post was tacky - I was just responding about what "news" she got.

Parent sent you a pm

Not really sure if this answers your question in any way...but I qualify for EA (no appointment yet :frown:) and have an MOC nomination. In my state, it sounds like all of the nominating sources talk and try not to give out multiple nominations to the same SA for any candidate, so I am really only looking at one possible nom to USAFA.

Does anybody know from past experience, if we qualify for EA and have NOT been deferred yet, does that mean we will most like hear in Jan, or will they send out more deferrals in Jan?
