Commitment after Graduation

Hello all!

I recently received a congressional nomination to KP. I have always viewed KP as the lesser known SA which drove my interests at first, and now that I have the nomination I have been looking at KP as my top college for the past week. Without a doubt I want to attend this academy if fortunate enough to possibly be accepted. However at this point in my life I am seeking a commission in the military as I have always wanted to serve. I was wondering if anyone could clear the commitment up for me.

I understand that upon graduation you receive a naval reserve commission and 3rd Mate license from the USCG and with these you can either go into the civilian workforce or get a commission. The question I have is what are the chances of being able to become an ensign in the USCG/USN after college?
 
The default service commitment is the one that you already described. This is what most Midshipmen elect to do after graduation. In addition to going into the USNR, you could elect to go into a (Air) National Guard or Reserve component of another branch, such as the Army Reserve. Going active duty isn't usually too hard to do, but as always, it depends on what the services need. The services' needs will certainly change 5 years from now, but it has always been possible to go active duty. Navy and Coast Guard billets are not too hard to get. Navy is most common for active duty Midshipmen as Kings Poit commissions naval officers and has a naval science department. Even though there is no Coast Guard department, there is an active duty CG officer stationed on campus and it is their job to help Midshipmen enter the Coast Guard as an officer. Service liaison officers also exist for the Army and Air Force and I believe there is a Gunnery Sgt. for the Marines. Navy and Coast Guard are the most common active duty choices, followed by the Army, then the Marine Corps, and finally the Air Force. I have heard rumors that Air Force is giving Kings Pointers little to no slots for active duty.

sorry to be so dense, but am I reading that correctly, you can be commissioned into the Army or the Coast Guard to complete your service requirements? My son was awarded the MOC nom for AF and MMA. The way we understood it was you either went into the Navy/Marines or captained a ship. I guess we are completely off base? He has D-1 wrestling programs recruiting him, but he definitely had an interest in the Coast Guard and MMA. I think his vision will get him DQd from both, but it wouldn't hurt to look into.
 
You can apply to any branch to fulfill your service obligation...it is not automatic nor is it guaranteed that you will get into a specific branch. Best of luck to your DS

What about his vision? Color vision? Or eye site?

I think as long as your correctable to 20/20 in one eye, 20/25 in the other and no worse than 20/400 un corrected you are good to go. KP2001 would be the guy to ask about that though.

You can fulfill you obligation in any armed service or the NOAA Corps.
 
The sheet the DOD-MRB contact sent us showed 20/20 corrected in both eyes for all 'Sea Services.' His vision is 20/15 in his right eye and 20/50 corrected in his left. He is qualified for the USAFA only because he does not want to be a pilot. West Point dq'd him and I think the USMMA and USCGA will also. The KP rep who recommended him for the MOC nom is looking into this for him.
