Qualified Letter

Does everyone who has had their portal opened and passed DODMERB and the CFA receive the "qualified" letter?:

We have received all your application information and the Admissions Committee has qualified your file academically, medically and physically. We are still waiting for a nomination before we can consider you for an appointment...

In the beginning of the admission process a candidate had to have an acceptable level of academic achievement before they would open your portal. Does simply having the portal open for academic reasons and adding to it the DODMERB and CFA triggers the above letter. Or is there a higher academic or admissions standard that renders the letter? Aside from those that have not passed CFA or been qualified by DODMERB, does everyone receive this letter?

I am qualified but I have not received a 3Q letter should I ask about that?

It looks like there may be different versions of the 3Q letter (ex. still waiting on nomination, placed on NWL, etc). I don't know the answers to your questions. Last year my DS received the 3Q letter mid-December with slightly different wording in the first paragraph:

We have received all your application information and the Admissions Committee has qualified your file. West Point has eliminated rolling admissions for this cycle. As such, all qualified applicants are placed on a National Waiting List until appointments are made. Most appointments will be tendered between 26 February and 1 May 2014.

Have your DS keep checking his candidate portal. That's where the letter showed up for my DS -- he didn't receive it in the mail.

It may depend on how your RC does things. I contacted my RC and he told me that he waited for a candidate to have a nomination before starting to review their file. I can speak for any other region but, if it is a very competitive region with a lot of applicants the RC may use the same process. Also, it does take time for a file to be reviewed. In my case, it took a month(albeit Thanksgiving was the week after I received my nomination.)

I think Physically and Medically qualified are relatively "black-and-white." You pass the CFA - check. No disqualifiers on DoDMERB - check.

Academically qualified involves the most moving parts - SAT/ACT, Leadership (including athletic participation), GPA, types of courses taken, etc. There's probably a minimum point level in each sub-category and a minimum aggregate total to reach the "qualified" level.

Not everyone reaches that level.

My DS received two 3Q letters last year, one before his nomination was received and one after. As noted above, the "need a nomination" verbiage was the only difference between the first and second letter.

IIRC from last year, there were several candidates that were obviously 3Q types that never received that letter but were appointed. I don't know if it varies by RC or if someone just forgot to check the box for the letter to be generated or what.

So that begs the question on the flip side - in previous years have there been those who received the letter and received a nomination but not an appointment?

Yes, there are always a lot of QNS (qualified not selected) candidates. Don't have the numbers in front of me but you can look at the class profile on the WP website that lists how many appointments are given out vs qualified candidates with noms.

I understand that there are QNS. I guess I was just trying to get a feeling of who actually receives this letter. The letter just reads kind of funny. I mean if your portal is open and you passed your cfa and dodmerb it seems obvious that you are at least 3q. Is it your understanding that everyone who is 3qd receives the letter? It is not reserved for some other admissions determined segment of the applicant population?

Your portal opens because you appear "competitive" based on self-reported information such as SAT/ACT scores, activities, etc. The portal being opened allows the School Official Evaluations to be completed, the transcript to be receipted and reviewed, verification of activities by counselor, CFA to be taken and recorded, etc. A lot of people simply don't complete the application = unqualified. Others might have appeared competitive in the Spring of their junior year but fail a class, don't pick up team captain as a senior, get an iffy SOE, etc. Like I said earlier, and it was purely speculation, there might be a minimum score in each sub-category. They might open the portal if you are GTG on six out of eight categories - seeing what turns up in those deficient categories as you complete the application during the late summer and fall.

Being 3Q'd passes you through another "gate." You should interpret it as "my child has what it takes to be admitted, but others may be more qualified and win the slot for which my child was nominated." Most often, you don't know your competition's full resume so you can't know if you're #1, #2 or competitive on a national level if you go to the wait list.
