Army Scholarship 4 year winner!

Congratulations! Is the scholarship for a specific school? How does that work?

My son chose Stetson.

We started the scholarship process my son's HS junior year so we could be done by summer and be up for the first board review in Oct.

We worked with his high school JROTC commander and the ROTC recruiter at the college he was interested in.

I recommend this as they were invaluable to the process with information.

Outstanding congratulations to your son.
If you don't mind some questions- what are your son's stats, including his major. Did he choose host or satellite college? Did he get offer from 1st board and how quickly did he get Dodmrb notice and set up. Thanks.

Answers..

My son chose a private college actually that is way out of my price range. The college meets him with room and board as a scholarship winner. I should have to pay nothing as even books are included. Your choices of schools are of course limited to those that have Army ROTCs. The private school he chose has a joint operation with another private aeronautical school.

His major is Environmental Engineering/Science

He scored 27 on SAT and was unable to retake to improve before board time.
He has a GPA 3.89 unweighted with AP and dual college classes. 4.3 weighted
Battalion commander of JROTC unit (125) cadets
He was not a varsity sport captain which is something they look for.
He was very active in JROTC
Orientering State champion
Lifeguard
Swam Varsity senior year in order to list a varsity sport.

Board met late Oct and we were notified Mid Nov.

Just received Dodmerb paperwork Dec.

Congratulations to your son on his scholarship offer.

That's great news about the R&B as well. Some expensive private schools are so happy that the gov't is paying the outrageous rack rate for tuition that they'll kick in R&B.

Just hold off a bit on buying that 28 foot Boston Whaler with your savings. While most scholarship winners are indeed commissioned as officers, some do not make it all the way through and end up on the hook for tuition repayment.

Always good advice.

I would just add one thing.

At my son's commissioning in 2012 I overheard a couple parents talking about how relieved they were now that their son's had graduated and they didn't have to worry about the possibility of paying back the scholarship.

What a lot of people forget is that there is a 4 year service obligation that goes along with that scholarship, and that needs to be fulfilled as well.

A fellow flight student of my son found that out the hard way. 6 months into flight school he was stupid and received a DUI on his way back to Ft. Rucker one night. The police in Enterprise have alcohol sniffing dogs that seek out flight students, at least it seems that way, his Blood Alcohol level was below the minimum but he was cited anyway for impairment.

It took a little over a month for him to be kicked out of both flight school and the Army. After a couple more months, to his surprise, he received a bill from the Army for his scholarship. He went to one of those very expensive private schools, around 45K tuition per year.

Point is, wait another 4 years after they report to BOLC before you buy the new boat.

Thanks for advice...

I too had heard the horror stories and have threatened my son the consequences of screwing up. I'm just hoping to make it through DODmerb after the stories I have read.

The private school is only 30 minutes from home, so hoping adjusting won't be to bad. We have pre-paid as backup if something still falls through. As for the military obligation, my son wants nothing more than to be a Army officer and career military since the age of 5.
